Doing my rewiring project, I wanted to remove the 50-year old switches from the dash to do a little clean up and inspect the switches themselves. The ignition switch came out pretty easily, but the other switches (wiper, headlamp, blower) were in there tight and didn't want to budge.

My first attempt at using a small screwdriver in one of the eight slots on the lock nut and tapping it down didn't budge the nut at all. I'm guessing there's a special tool, but who wants to take the time to find it, buy it, use it twice, and then put it in the toolbox never to be seen again?

So I grabbed my C-clip pliers and imagine that - they were a perfect fit for the slots. I used one with the larger pins so as not to break anything if the nut didn't budge.

So here's my write up on removing them if you ever have the desire - or the need - to remove your switches:

This nut probably requires a special tool, but who sells it and what do you call it anyway?

The knobs for the blower and wiper have a set screw, loosen that and the knob comes off the shaft.

This is the nut that didn't want to turn. Who can blame it? It's been sitting there for 50 years.

Lining up the C-clip pliers to the slots and a simple rotation loosened the nut without any effort.

I hope this helps someone... I'm glad it worked for me!

A pair of needle-nose pliers works, as well.

I tried that initially, the tips of my needlenose didn't fit into the slots very well, and I didn't want to damage the plastic trim ring when it slipped out. I now have a smaller pair that might have worked, but this C-clip pliers I already had.

I used to use the C clip pliers as well with my previously owned 67 & 68 Barracudas. Always worked great.

Never thought of that. Sometimes an antenna nut wrench works too.
