Hey... so how to I get the pulley off of my water pump? I had assumed there would be bolts for me to unbolt... but I don't see them anywhere.

It's a '74 318.

Do I need to get a puller of some sort?

its probably gaulded on there. tap it........ it should fall off if you took the bolts out.

How To .....

...large pry bar?
.... BFH - big frickin hammer?
... come along?
... explosives?

I know, everyone loves a little azz, no one likes a smart-azz.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Everyne means nuts (and studs) right?

You got those off?

Smack it with a rubber mallet.

Starting from the 'front'...

Did you remove the bolts holding the fan on?...or if you have a 'clutch fan', the clutch? They are also what holds the spacer to the front of the pulley...and the pulley on the front of the water pump. Once the attaching hardware is removed, as was mentioned before, you may have to 'tap' on each of them, but they will come off. Each has a 'centering point' if you will...a slight protrusion to ensure it all goes together centered and correctly.

It can all be made easier if the fan shroud (if your car has one) is unbolted and laid back toward the engine. This gives you more room at the front of the fan. You can set it aside once the fan is off, just remember to drape it back in there before re-installing the fan(!)... Unless you like the practice of removing fans (you won't get the shroud in with the fan installed). Be careful around the radiator fins. They are easily folded over...and sharp like a knife.

Yeah, the fan's off. I suppose I could just start smacking it... I should probably replace the water pump anyway, so it doesn't matter if I wreck it right? Right. :headbang:

I would be more worried about tweeking the pulley than damaging the water pump. Depending on the miles the pump has on it, or how long you plan to have it off...yes it can be cheap insurance to install a knew one. if there is any play at all in the shaft, by all means replace it.

Try tapping around the pulley grove (like ringing a bell), as that will apply more leverage to the center where it is stuck. Some penatrating oil wouldn't hurt either.
Another option would be to use a propane torch to heat the front of the pulley, expanding the metal a bit. It may release itself.

Good luck!

Three whacks with the dead-blow did it, the pulley and the spacer came off no problem. There isn't any play in the water pump, <shrug> we'll see, it's a while before I will be re-assembling anyway. Thanks for the help, guys!

Hi killi 6, well glad you didn't kill the water pump when you whacked it with the dead-blow! lol. Yea those things get rusted on or something. Its a real tight fit to make sure they are centered properly. Good luck
