What are the differances between the hp blocks and say late 70s early 80s 440 motor home blocks.

No major differences. I think the motor mount ears are a bit thicker on the newer ones. There is no difference in a hp or non-hp block they all went down the same line for the machining. The builder just stamped the hp after putting the hi-po guts in that particular block. Additionally everything I've read indicates the newer blocks are every bit as good maybe even better. Quite a few of them appear to have more iron around the main webs and most have less core shift issues. I would not hesitate to put together a hot 440 using a newer truck block.

yeh,
check this out http://440source.com/blockinfo.htm

later blocks had better strenght ribbing around mounts and some of the journals i am aware andthey had much larger coolatn holes in the deck area for better cooling, but i think they had less nickel in the casting which is a tad weaker then earlier blocks but i have read and been told numerous times that the later blocks are the better to make a performance block out of.

One thing I noticed on my 77 440 block are the huge bore chamfers. This adds chamber volume, which further reduces compression.
