Hurricane Irene

Well looks like we are going to get some of Irene's fury here in the Mid Atlantic area. Going to take tomorrow off work to tighten things up around here and move the cars to higher ground.We are located about 7' above sea level and when T.S. Isabel hit in '03 we got water around 3 sides of the garage.Not going to take chances, would rather have wasted time getting prepared then crying about it later! Anyone else on the east coast getting ready?

Rode out Ike here just east of Houston. The eye passed right over us. Man, these things suck! I'm located 9 miles from Galveston Bay and about 5 miles south of the ship channel. Don't want to do that anymore but luckily, rain was minimal and no bad tornadoes. That's what usually gets you...that and storm surge.

Rode out Ike here just east of Houston. The eye passed right over us. Man, these things suck! I'm located 9 miles from Galveston Bay and about 5 miles south of the ship channel. Don't want to do that anymore but luckily, rain was minimal and no bad tornadoes. That's what usually gets you...that and storm surge.

The storm surge is what I'm most concerned with. Once the water starts coming up, your stuck and you don't know when its going to crest. Still looking for covered storage,got some open high ground available, no trees!

We are just west of Philly in the suburbs. I think the cars will be alright as they are securely garaged with in ground drains around them. I am more concerned about the 80' trees on one side of my house. Can only hope if one comes down, it goes the other way.

A few years ago, had 3 eyes pass within 5 miles of my house, and another within 15.
Yikes. Not a fun time. Had a 60' tall 30" dia (each) tripple split trunk tree fall twice, missing the screen porch by 18 inches the first time and 3 feet the second time. The last one got taken down by me. Not waiting for strike three. At one point we were without power for a couple of weeks and without water for the better part of one week.
Gas, plywood, tarps, ice, geterators, extension cords, fans and window a/c units got REAL expensive.

Pine trees are fairly weak and having them near any structures isn't a good idea. Also, no hurricane parties. A cat 3 hurricane without tornadoes is bad enough but if something happens like a window blows in, you need to be on your game to take care of stuff like that. My old home flooded (7") not because of storm surge but because of a drainage problem with the heavy rain and going outside to get blocks etc to lift furniture was hard enough without being half drunk! Stay safe and be careful...

When Katrina came through I was keeping a few cars in a buddies shop down by the river. Shortly thereafter, he took a few pictures as he paddled around the inside of the shop in a canoe. The only thing visible was the front edge of a hood that was left open, as the cars were 7ft. underwater. I've since moved to higher ground.

Actually, we got through the storm ok, it was the next day when they opened up the dam 15 miles upstream because the resevoir was overfull. This, of course, wasn't announced and caught everybody offguard. :angryfire:

Spent the whole day starting at 6am and just finished. Moved 4 cars to high ground. Got my 2 B Bodies in a buddies shop, 15 miles away , the Magnum is outside away from any trees next to a block bldg, on high ground. Put all the ole ladies potted plants (30 of them) and crap inside one of my empty garages. Still need to get all the good stuff off the floor level in the shop and up on benchs. Trying to get everything up above a 10' surge level, last time we saw a 7 ' surge. Hope all this work is for nothing! Thanks to 68 Chicken for your offer of dry storage for my cars, very neighborly of you.

I'm in Southern NJ about 40 miles from the ocean and about 20 miles from the Delaware Bay. We're at 85'-100' above sea level. Not too worried about the water but the wind is always a concern. Keepin' our fingers crossed.

A similar situation happened to a buddy of mine that lives north of Houston but on the down side of Lake Conroe....they opened the flood gates and he got 4 feet of water in his house and garage....but they did announce it.

I went through hurricane Donna in 1960 in Massachusetts...my sister's name is Donna and she fits the bill to a T!!
