Does anyone know if an original pistol grip shifter handle will fit into a Hurst shifter unit for a 4 speed? Sorry if I am not using the correct naming. I bought the car with a Hurst shifter handle in it and am assuming it has a Hurst shifting mechanism(the part the handle bolts into). I cannot tell though since I have never seen an original shifter mechanism and do not see any visible markings.

Thanks

What year car? Is the shifter bolted to mechanism or does it mount in the shift mechanism in a rubber insulator?

The shifter mechanisum will be marked Hurst.

The Pistol Grip handle was also made by Hurst for Chrysler.

There are two types of handles as mentioned above. One is a bolt in and the other is called a bayonet type and slips into the shifter mechanisum and locks into place. To remove it you slip a feeler gauge in between the handle and the shifter to release it. Often times people will drill holes in the bayonet type so it can be used with the bolt in type shifter.

Here is a picture of one with the bolt on shifter handle that one of my "FRIENDS" borrowed the handle off of over twenty years ago. I kinda got the impression he ain't gonna bring it back. I am pretty sure it is a Hurst shifter. It's a mighty small picture I hope you can see it. By the way I no longer have a use for this 4 speed for an early A body.

Thanks guys! It is on a 1970 Charger and bolts on. It looks a lot like the one in the picture except for where it bolts on. The shaft is slightly different. I do not visibly see it is stamped with "Hurst" or anything. Here is a picture

Thats a hurst mechanism. Pistol grip will fit. Like 696pack says, depending on lever you may or may not have to drill holes to put the 2 together. You definitely have the better setup. The bayonet type is ****.

FYI- Console and non-console shifter handles are different, be sure to check if you're buying a used one.

Do you know if a console will fit over the steel hump or does that need to come out if I ever decide to add a console?

Console hump and non console hump are different. I cant tell from your photo which you hVe, but you nd a hump meant for console and vice versa

good to know. I bought that hump aftermarket to replace the one that was put in kind of shoddy by the previous owner. I have seen pictures of the underside of 4 speed consoles before and always thought it looked too tight for my set up but wasn't aware they made two different humps. I think that left bulbous side on the hump is too big for what those consoles look like underneath so based on what you said I have to assume this is for a non console set up.

Here is a picture of it when I bought it before I cleaned it up.

I hate to even ask this question because it is too late but when I installed this hump, the shifter was positioned way to far forward. Not quite hitting the front side of the hump opening when in 1st but close. I tried adjusting the shifter linkage underneath to bring the shifter back some but it would not work so I ended up positioning the actual hump about an inch forward from where the grooves line up with the floorboards so I could keep the shifter dead center in the hump hole. I am now seeing Hurst shifter boots for sale with the shaft opening slightly forward. Does anyone with a 4 speed know if that shifter should be dead center in the hole or forward some? You can see in the picture I previously posted where it lines up on mine now.

Where did you get that info? I have never heard of such a thing. If it is true enlighten me with some proof.

Here is a link to the pepole that sell all of the 4 speed componants and I don't see any mention of it there either.

And brewers carrys the "reproduction" hump for 66-70 b's originally there were two different ones. And the repop ones "fit" console abd non console.... So. I have my story strait. Please dont rank bud. We all mopar friends here

So mine could fit both a console and non console installation?

Any opinions on the shifter position in the hump hole? Dead center vs forward some in the hole.
