Well like anything, its all about the combination. I wouldn't take their peak numbers with anything more than the paper they are written on, but I would ultimately look at the variation of power difference in each manifold for its intended use. In the 440 manifold comparison, the power numbers were vastly different due to the increased CI and some intakes were flow limited.

they just used the same old stock iron heads for all tests, right? i believe the test.

I just have a tough time thinking that a mismatched intake like a tunnel ram or the victor would have a negligible effect on performance. Am I that far off here?

I tend to agree and thought the test was inconclusive when I first saw it. Just changing the intake is not the whole story. It's the entire package that makes the difference not just the intake. What they found out was which intake worked best with their engine. It's like changing jets in a carb to optimize it's performance. Large overlap cams and tunnel rams put the power peak way up high as opposed to down low with a dual plane and short over lap cam. A better test would be to pick a target and build according to that goal using whatever parts are available. He who gets the best results for the least amount of money wins.

I'll do a seat of the pants test for everyone, if you all supply me with different intakes!... LOL!
I'll take an Indy dual quad, cross ram, tunnel ram, and whatever else you guys want to toss my way!
I'll test my Victor intake with a 1050 Holley for you too, if one happens to show up at the door.... LOL!

PM me for a mailing address.....
....... (I wish!)........

Just my $.02 but it has been my experience that a tunnel ram (properly jetted) makes more HP and TQ, even at lower RPM than most single planes I tried. Not just at high RPM.

Of course, depending on the type and mfg of tunnel ram. That being said, they can make for a fantastic street and strip manifold. Your tuning, however, will be just 2X as difficult! :)

Mopar Muscle also did an extensive test of 440 intakes.
I run an Edelbrock Performer RPM on my 493. I was interested in seeing how it compared to the others. Trouble is, I've never seen an intake article like this with a long stroke 440 for the mule. The added inches changes things. A long stroke doesn't need to spin as high to make power.
In most of the comparisons I've read, the Holley Street Dominator fares well. The Edelbrock Victor 440 does too. I've considered an intake swap since those 2 intakes scored better than the RPM. Height is a concern though. The Holley sits lower than the RPM and would actually help with clearing the hood. The Victor sits over an inch taller than the RPM and I am NOT going to cut my hood. I've considerd the TM-7 and the M-1 single plane as well.

Single plane intakes seem to be best suited for the 108 LSA cams, or cams that tend to have more overlap.
