Parts prices. My 2006 Vibe AWD had a bad rear wheel bearing/hub assembly.:( My local garage said their parts sources sent them to the dealer and the part would be $380. I have a good relationship with the garage  and they suggested I do my own checking on the internet. I stopped found the part number - it is a Timken and went on line. I found them on the internet for $112 plus shipping. I ordered two, figuring if one went the other would soon. For laughs, I checked my local chain parts store and they were $280 each.

My beef is - why would a dealer charge over three times what the part could be had for?????? The parts store is was over double. Is the markup on parts that high????

My "better half" has a '98 VW Jetta: Vibration Dampner, $58.00, list $412.00 Look it up!
So you tell me. Do they think we are all dumb?

Sometimes, dealer parts are best. If you ever had to install a waterpump on some of the Chrysler v6, or 4's, the cost of the pump is NOTHING compared to the price to get to it! Best to buy factory in that case. BTW, on your Vibe, alot of them are "one-time" axle nuts, and recommended to use a new nut when replacing the hub bearing. Some are pinched to be self-locking, and some are ny-locks. But they usually recommend replacing the hub-nut at that time. I've had some good luck using frugalmechanic.com for shopping. But you have to make sure you know what you are looking for cause they do make mistakes for the application.

I worked for a local parts store.....GMC 1500 front pads Retail $27.99 before tax..... My cost was $18.99 Taxes in.My boss got them for 10% less than that.

They do it cause they can.....and because they will warranty "their" part, but not an "aftermarket" part......even if it's the exact same part

The part I got had the same Timken number stanped on it as the dealer piece. Off-brand parts are usually not as good as OEM, but this is the same damn part!

I hear ya!

I understand that there are "generic" brands out there, copies of parts that are not quite the same but will work in a pinch. We are talking about the exact same part, there is not one thing different from the one you see listed for $78.00 and find it somewhere else for $24.95! It's the markup. Garages and Dealerships can buy a part for $20.00 and market it up for profit, say 15% and thats ok. They have to make a living too. But some of these price differences are crazy. All I have to say is that when you need a part for your car, no matter what it is, you better do some real price shopping! I have been seeing differences of hundreds of dollars for a one hundred dollar part! Whats up with that? Put these "price gougers" out of business or make them lower their prices, by not dealing with them...

It's been happening for years, but i don't think it's been this bad before  Dealerships are loosing their a**, and now they gotta jam it to the customer... I absolutley agree, you def. has to shop around. .02
