What kind of timing chains are recommended here? I have found decent priced single roller, double roller, straight cut timing gear sets, among other styles. Im not sure how I would be able to deal with the sound of the gear set ones.

I would get a double roller and make sure you get one with the correct number of bolts i.e. 1 or 3 depending on which cam you have. Most except 70-71 440 6 BBLs were single bolt stock cam and timing gear sets.

Not sure about the Hemi's

Itsna 67that the Po put a 383 2bbl in. As far as I know its a stock engine.

Is the only way to know for sure to take off the cover?
Also what else is needed? I know I need coolant, the chain kit, cover gasket, and crankshaft seal.

I bought a Double Roller Chain from EDE.....works I think every chainset in the 60-90 USD range should be good.

I would go with the double roller chain much stronger than stock

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Just my 2 cents worth. Are you having timing issues or something that would lead you to believe there was a problem? Been there, done that kinda work in my younger days.

I use a quality true roller like Cloyes but most of my stuff is mild performance oriented.

The chain is slapping really bad at idle and around 60mph. Occasionally I will get a backfire through the carb. Hesitates horribly from a stop, and when I tried to set the timing it is about 30btdc(I think it was anyway) to get it to run even remotely good. Pings pretty bad at high loads, and just feels sluggish.

The one I am looking at is 'comp cams' double roller 2104

The Comp Cams 2104 double roller is good. Less than $50 from Summit. Stay away from the gear drives unless you have a need for a lot of extra noise in your life. Yea they sound kinda cool for the first couple of rides but you get tired of the noise real quick.

You got that right smitty. The gear drive is cool for the first few miles then gets real annoying.

I have been on a few different sites so far and have not been able to find the gasket for the cover itself[there are a lot of 'performance' covers out there though], or the waterpump housing gaskets.

Buy a timing cover set it has the seal and the gaskets optional add a pan gasket and drop it as well
