Hello,
I am going to put REAL electronic ignition system in/on the 383 in my '65 Dodge Coronet 500. Right now I have a Pertronix module inside the distributor.

I bought a Proform distributor kit, part # 440/427. I have also bought an MSD Street Fighter box w/rev limiter, part # 5520. An MSD tech told me the box would work fine with the orange box that came with the Proform kit, however, I have a close friend that SWEARS I should not use the box with the kit despite what the MSD tech told me.
I value the opinions of the members on B Bodies.....what do you think?

The electronic distributor is wired directly to the Street Fire (I think you mistakenly typed street "Fighter").
The orange box is not used. I like the street fire mine works real well for me.
Actually people say the pertronix stuff is pretty good.

It could be wired either way, but you don't need the orange box in the loop.
Wire distributor to MSD box as mentioned above

get a msd distributor. they're plug and play and high quality and come up on Ebay cheap

Rev limit is your foot.

Right foot is the limit .

I would choose the Mopar points distributor (Prestolite dual point distributor ftom a RB engine) with the spacer ring to allow it to fit in a B block. The Prestolite dual point distributor will operate just as well, produce just as much HP (in spite of what your buddy may think). For an occasional use vehicle, points will last many years b4 replacement may be needed. My RS23V0A GTX will buzz up to 6000 RPM, start every time, idle reasonably smoothly, in spite of the Mopar 292° 0.509" cam with 1.6 roller rocker arms and 11.0: pistons. The real question is: Do really need electronic ignition or just want one, because everyone else has one? To quote Bill Shakespeare....."to be or not to be, THAT is the question"..... Just my opinion of course.

So then, my buddy was right and the MSD tech was wrong. What further confused me is that the Street Fire [not fighter as I originally typed] instructions show the white wire is connected to the "amplifier" which I assumed was the orange box[?]. You can tell vehicle electronics is not my strong suit. Also, I used a Pertronix module in an old '62 Impala that I had once with zero problems......BUT.....I'm too far gone now....I have the Proform kit AND the refurbished Street Fire box. I really wanted to use the box because of the rev-limiter that is built in to it.

I second the Prestolite dual point. I use mine to trigger an MSD 6AL. Points last even longer as they do not carry any current. Best of both worlds and appears stock as the MSD box is hidden. Mine will pull 7000 rpm. Should the MSD fail, you move a couple of wires and drive home on the stock ignition.

I guess it's either one or the other but not both?

I've always used the original Direct Connection/Mopar Performance electronic ignition conversion
kits as sold by Ma Mopar. Easy, quick installation and the aftermarket sells all manner of control
units for replacements if you wanna get fancy with it - and the distributor is new and factory quality.
