The engine is not my strong point. It is not running right and I haven't been able to figure it out. I'm looking for a local mechanic (Schaumburg, IL) that can help me out with my 72 Charger 318ci. Is there anyone in my area who is willing to help or do you know of a shop that is good with these engines?

Maybe you should try describing your problem and see if some of the members can help you out. Might not be as bad as you think. Lots of knowledge here...might as well leverage it.

I have a 72' Charger with a 318ci, mostly stock except for Edelbrock performer intake, Edelbrock 600cfm carb, Summit Headers, Pertronics coil and Pertronics electronic ignition & Carter fuel pump.

The problem is that every time I get it up to 55 mph it bogs, looses all power but does not die. I slow down and it continues to sputter, etc. Only after stopping the car will it drive fine again while under 55 mph. It seems as though this all started after the Pertronics coil and electronic ignition was installed.

I have read a lot in the timing Q&A on this site, all of which are very helpful and confusing at the same time (I think I still need help with the timing). Adjusting the timing only changed the bogging from 55mph to 45mph. I installed a new fuel filter, plugs, wires and Carter mechanical fuel pump and am getting 4-5 psi to the carb with that. When in park, it will rev all day without a problem, only under load will it die every time when I hit 45mph. I dropped the tank and was actually shocked to see how clean it was. I'm pretty sure it is still the original tank. I checked the fuel filter and gas tank pickup, all are clean.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you check your vacuum lines for cracks and proper fit? Could be your secondary accelerator pump that is failing assuming that carb has one... Could be your timing curve isnt coming in or is out of whack. What is your timing at idle and at 3k? Assuming you have a light.

sounds like a timing advance problem. did it do this before the pertronix install??? i dont know what Pertronix you have but some of them have limiters...some have advance curves and springs....some have an "initial" set up......some dont.. i would get out the literature on it and read up. you may have not known this and not have it set correctly or have over looked something.

a lot of times a boging problem is fuel related its nice to have anyway you may want to just install a fuel pressure guage on your carb inlet to make sure you are geting adequette fuel to carb! but would deff. start at that ign. system if the problem did not start until you installed it!

Boy,sure sounds like fuel starvation to me. Any kinks in the fuel line from tank to carb?

Vapor lock? Could that gas tank not be venting properly? Total guess here. Jim
