I posted a video from a guy on YouTube about how to do this. He makes it look easy. @ hours into it and still can't get the roller cage out on the bolt end. I tried tapping the bolt out but it's too tight. Can anyone tell me where I went wrong?

It's comes apart?
I just sand blasted some last weekend along with the seat bottoms.
A quick look seemed to indicate there are rivets holding the two together and stopping the movement fore and aft.
I'll have to look again.

Well, I've come to the conclusion I need to either press the carriage bolt out or drill the last rivet out and replace it with a bolt and nut when I put the slider back on the track. What think ye?

i drilled the rivet out bought a nearly identical one at the local hardware store, put it in a vise and crushed it. drop of paint and can't tell it from the rest. used silicone food grade grease its clear, no smell. works like new.

I was starting to bend **** so I gave up and drilled it. a lot easier to get it back together too.

@69 GTX

Tim may weigh in here....in his build thread here he shows this process very well.....

Mechanic you are correct in your assumption. I did take a grinder/dremel and remove the swedge on the carriage bolts befor tapping them out. It the don't tap out do a little more work on the swedge. Otherwise you'll tweak the tracks. I'll see if I can give you a link to my thread.

Do you know what size the rivets are? I drilled them out but I didn't think to measure the holes before I dropped them off for powder coating.

I took what was left to the hardware with me about a year ago must be 1/4 or 5/16. as i recall.

I have the flat springs that were attached through a hole in them. That hole is a bit bigger than 1/4". Would it be the same size as that?

the rivet just needs to slide thru it so you can crush the other side to pin it. buy one of each size. mine had the flat spring also rivet just slid thru that opening with no pressure. less slop the better.

Sounds like a winner.

Thanks

The rivets are solid steel of 3/16" diameter with a 3/8" diameter flat head with a head height (thickness) of 3/16" and a total length between 3/8" to 1/2".

I can't find any flat head rivets with a head that thick. So, I'm going to use a round head rivet instead. Only you guys will ever know.

In hind site, it is better to remove the bolt like 69GTX did in his build thread. Live and learn.
