The keyed cylinder on my steering colum makes poor contact sometimes.
It easily pulls right out of the colum.
Recently it is harder and harder to make contact and start the car.
Big PITA.

Can I just get a new cylinder and key or is there more that is entailed?
What else should I be looking at?
Its a 71 RR.

If it ain't one thing it's another.

I've never taken one of those apart, but they shouldn't do that. lol The key cylinder is just a locking device for the ignition switch itself, so I'm guessing what is happening is the cylinder is moving away from the switch and isn't engaging (turning) the actual switch. That sound right?

Yeah, I'd say it's time for a new cylinder mechanism.....or at least whatever is supposed to lock it in to place

am I stating the obvious here????????

Hey Tem,

Doe anyone know how to steal a car. I mean if you rip out the ignition cylinder how do you start the car with a screw driver or is that just TV/movie stuff.

Nope. The key cylinder is just there to act as a locking mechanism. The actual switch plugs in to the back of the lock. Put the key in to release the cylinder, and turning the cylinder turns the switch.

Once upon a time... I had a 71 VW Microbus. The day I bought it, the key cylinder broke. So I disassembled the thing and removed the big nylon thing that had all the wires in it. I put the column back together and left the nylon thing out. When I wasn't driving the bus the wiring would be draped over the E brake mechanism under the dash. (its in the middle of the dash) And when I wanted to go some where I'd grab the wires, insert a small flat blade screwdriver into the slot in the middle of the nylon thing, and give it a twist. ZOOOM....I was on my way

I think that will answer your question:grin:
