Ebay doesnt know a road runner from a mustang. numbers should match on the rad support...the trunk lip...and the vin. sometimes the rad support is changed due to collisions...but how often does someone change the trunk lip???? YES ITS ILLEGAL....especially when theres no title. he will NEVER sell that car.....maybe for parts or to some unkowing dumbass.

the only way Ebay will know about is to report it to them .

That's the hell of it -- I did report it, with about a day left in the sale. Looks like the car sold anyway.

thats how they used to sell stolen cars back in the day.buy a wrecked one,steal a good one and swap the vin plate.ya,pretty much against the law.

FYI No vin on a trunk lip on 71-74 b bodies, it is on the cowl under the hood weatherstrip

I see many posts about cars with the wrong V.I.N. in some fashion or another. I see many people making statements about what is legal and what is not legal. Let me clear this up as much as I can.

You have to understand that things are different from state to state.

There is a Federal V.I.N. tampering law that addresses all of this and MOST states follow that law. However, the individual states can make the law more stringent if they chose.

You need to research the state law and see if there are exceptions to the law as there are in the info I am posting here from:
Federal law on this issue from the Cornell Law Library
TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 25 > § 511
Prev | Next
§ 511. Altering or removing motor vehicle identification numbers

(a) A person who—
(1) knowingly removes, obliterates, tampers with, or alters an identification number for a motor vehicle or motor vehicle part; or
(2) with intent to further the theft of a motor vehicle, knowingly removes, obliterates, tampers with, or alters a decal or device affixed to a motor vehicle pursuant to the Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Act,
shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both.
(b)
(1) Subsection (a) of this section does not apply to a removal, obliteration, tampering, or alteration by a person specified in paragraph (2) of this subsection (unless such person knows that the vehicle or part involved is stolen).
(2) The persons referred to in paragraph (1) of this subsection are—
(A) a motor vehicle scrap processor or a motor vehicle demolisher who complies with applicable State law with respect to such vehicle or part;
(B) a person who repairs such vehicle or part, if the removal, obliteration, tampering, or alteration is reasonably necessary for the repair;
(C) a person who restores or replaces an identification number for such vehicle or part in accordance with applicable State law; and
(D) a person who removes, obliterates, tampers with, or alters a decal or device affixed to a motor vehicle pursuant to the Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Act, if that person is the owner of the motor vehicle, or is authorized to remove, obliterate, tamper with or alter the decal or device by—
(i) the owner or his authorized agent;

(ii) applicable State or local law; or
(iii) regulations promulgated by the Attorney General to implement the Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Act.
(c) As used in this section, the term—
(1) “identification number” means a number or symbol that is inscribed or affixed for purposes of identification under chapter 301 and part C of subtitle VI of title 49;
(2) “motor vehicle” has the meaning given that term in section 32101 of title 49;
(3) “motor vehicle demolisher” means a person, including any motor vehicle dismantler or motor vehicle recycler, who is engaged in the business of reducing motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts to metallic scrap that is unsuitable for use as either a motor vehicle or a motor vehicle part;
(4) “motor vehicle scrap processor” means a person—
(A) who is engaged in the business of purchasing motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts for reduction to metallic scrap for recycling;
(B) who, from a fixed location, uses machinery to process metallic scrap into prepared grades; and
(C) whose principal product is metallic scrap for recycling;
but such term does not include any activity of any such person relating to the recycling of a motor vehicle or a motor vehicle part as a used motor vehicle or a used motor vehicle part.
(d) For purposes of subsection (a) of this section, the term “tampers with” includes covering a program decal or device affixed to a motor vehicle pursuant to the Motor Vehicle Theft Prevention Act for the purpose of obstructing its visibility.

Now, understand that what I have bolded above applies to anyone that is doing body repair up to and including grafting multiple cars together. Different states have different requirements some including an inspection by a state official during certain portions of the marriage of two or more bodies concerning which V.I.N. is used or possible a state issued V.I.N. The bottom line here is you need to check with the state you are working in.

As a Wisconsin dealers lisence holder I can tell you one thing... deep ****. Dont do it, try it, think about it..............

About as illegal as it gets. Ebay probably figures it's ok by them since the guy disclosed it.

Same situation came up recently with an R/T here in the forums. Selling on ebay maybe isnt the smartest thing cuz now there's a written record.

Reused vin

My under standing here in Florida it is the VIN they are concerned about..The fender tag was really about options and yes it had the VIN but the Dash Vin is the one they check on cars at the DMV....They NEVER check the fender tag..You can buy reproduction fender tags legally the VINS you MUST take off another car and that is illegal...
:sunny:

I say good luck to who ever bought it! I once (ONCE!!!!) bought a motorcycle wih no title six moths later all I could do was part it out. Fortunately I only lost $100 (hey it was a long time agao when you could buy a $100 vehicle and drive it for a couple of years with little or no problems) on that deal.

If it had money spent on it and was driven as stated,why no title ?
