I just put on my Indy 440-25 intake and the distributor cap hold down clamp hits the intake. It is not letting the intake line up all the way.

My question is:
Can I take the distributor out and turn it so it clears and then set the timing again? I figured that I would have to do it like I was putting the distributor in for the first time. #1 cylinder TDC ect....

Will this work or am I going to have to make a custom cap hold down clamp?

its a problem you'll have to turn your distributor drive gear so the rotation lets your #1 be at around 12:00.
Get your timing mark set up on your balancer and then turn your distributor till it lines up with your #1. make sure you have ample room to turn your distributor advanced and retarded.
It does fit you'll have to play with it till you get it all lined up.
i'll get you a picture to show you.

I was hoping you would answer this. Like I always say "Nothing is bolt on or easy"

Heres a few pics. to help you out.
Note the position of the screws on the dist. cap. Yours probably have those little tabs with allen bolts. It should not effect you in any way if you line it up in this manner. I use to have the same dist. as yours.

That does help. My distributor was installed with the cap hold downs turned even more to the left than yours. The intake hits the cap dead in the middle of that bulge. I need to reset my TDC and clock the distributor like yours so I will have some room to adv./retard my time if needed. Maybe this pic will show it.

Pull your distributor out.
Put your large screwdriver in the gear slot and pull it out and then send it in so the groove in the shaft is facing in the 2:00- 7:00 position, when it is fully down on the cam I think!

Could you explain this just a little more. What will this accomplish? Will the motor still be in time? This is what I have been told by some other racers, let me know what you think.
1: Put my motor at TDC
2: Mark distr. where #1 is currently
3: Loosen hold down, rotate so clamp is clear of the manifold(leaving some for adv/rtd adjustment.
4.Remove cap and hold down, lift distrib. out and align rotor with the mark on distr., drop back into gear, rotate distr. body to align mark with the #1 wire on cap.

Does this sound correct. I am still interested in the way you are speaking of also.

I'm telling you basically the same thing. You'll need to move your plug wires Put #1 where your rotor is pointing. Set your balancer where you want your timing to be not TDC. Then you'll be exactly where you want your distributor without having to move it anymore.

Hey, just dont hijack the thread or seem like a nub - Is the pic attached correct(when #1 piston) is at tdc, and the rotor is at the 2-7 position ...Im still new to all the BB MSD stuff
I know the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
but i read the rotation in counter clockwise on the distributor..am I correct or nein-

my #1 is where your #5 is, you got the firing order and direction correct.

I moved my gear 2 teeth and had to move the wires 2 spots. It clears now and I have some room to adj. for adv/rtd. I have to finish a few things on the intake before I can start it to set the timing.

I also got my pressure relief valve installed. I didn't have a small enough tap to thread the holes for the provided small bolts so I drilled the mounting plate to 1/4 holes. This created another problem because the 1/4 bolts I planned on using had a large head so they wouldn't clear a raise part of the bottom plate. I had to make a trip to Lowes to get some allen head bolts to clear. While I was there I grabbed a 1 1/8" hole saw to drill the relief hole. It turned out fine but at first I wasn't so sure.

I got my throttle cable figured out and added a 2nd return spring. I need to do the fuel lines to finish it. Almost there!

Thanks for all the help. 90% of my projects wouldn't get done without your help.
