My car lacks the lower choke tube - the one from underside of exhaust manifold running up to the air cleaner base. I have a reproduction tube. Is it even possible to snake this thing in, in an assembled car or am I wasting my time? Would removing the intake heat tubes give enough room. Or should I just cut it mid point and snake in from top and bottom and connect the two with a piece of rubber tubing line?

66 Satellite Hemi

Thanks

You should be able to get them in. Here is what it looks like without the car in the way.

Look at the throttle cable bracket. It’s a auto with the pin removed on a 4speed.

That thread last week where a guy said hemi were easy to work on just because of the spark plug position. LOL! Called A hemi-roid for a reason.

Thanks for the picture. Not sure but the hood may keep me from being able to stab it in from above. From down under looks to be a real problem.

The picture shows a clamp up at top - although the one tube is there I bet I'm missing that clamp.

Thanks

I’d go from bottom up. These are tricky, everything is filled up.

Got it in. I flattened out some curves slightly and worked it in from top side working outside the heater hoses and once down below the manifold - rotating it under the heater hoses and behind the motor. I think straightening the curves a bit actually may help it fit better but I need to get the clamp brackets to secure them at the back to finish it up.

I need to double ck, But I dont think mine has that tube, Is it really needed ??

I know I dont have anything that attaches to the air cleaner

Beats me Bill. I know my choke is not currently functioning which may just be adjustment or frozen parts and the tube Is relatively cheap (except have to buy a set) so I went ahead and bought it. It also requires a brass reducer fitting to connect down at the exhaust manifold which Mega Parts has.

But I’m a little mystified how this whole choke system is supposed to work. The connection port on my manifold was open, which you would think would be a heck of a loud exhaust leak. But I didn’t notice it with the motor running? And being connected to the air cleaner I wouldn’t think they would have it pulling exhaust into it. All the choke systems on my other cars are the heat stove with thermostatic coil and rod in them. This heat riser choke system with the heat tube is new to me and I don’t fully understand how it all functions yet??

Maybe someone will chime in and explain it. Does your choke function?

I have been driving my Hemi Charger regularily since 1985. All of the choke bits are there for appearance, but do not function. This is the start sequence that has always worked for me, even in cold Canadian weather.
Do not stroke gas pedal first.
Crank over (with the ignition key) in 10 second sessions until you show a bit of oil pressure.
This primes the oil system and fills the carb bowls.
8 full gas pedal strokes.
Crank with the ignition again, it will start. You may have to hold your foot on it for fast idle until it warms up a bit.
I have found this method completely reliable.

Thanks. I've been using an old beauty saloon type mustard bottle now for years to prime my cars in advance of starting after they have been sitting a week or more. It's now habit to just pull the air cleaner, prime Holleys through the bowl vent until gas dribbles out the booster and on Carter/Edelbrock's I just squirt a little gas down the primaries. Turn the key and they fire instantly on the first revolution. I'm just a natural tinkerer and anything that doesn't work I try to get working - part of my fun with old cars.

Cranking to build oil pressure is not the thing to do.
As stated by many machinists and engine builders.

If you want to get oil Pressure up then remove the distributor and prime it with the drill.

Yes fill the float bowls through the vents manually on any type of carb.

The way I understand it. There is a tube that goes thru the right manifold and these 2 small tubes attach to them . fresh air down from the inside the air cleaner. goes thru the lower side and heated air goes back up thru one with the white insulation on it to the carb choke

The smaller on from the air cleaner down is NOT on my car. I need to get under it and see is / what is missing from below the exhaust manifold

My choke works fine, although I have it set pretty weak so it pulls off in a few minutes ( not much need for a choke out here )

If there is a tube inside the manifold connecting the two ports then that would explain the operation. It would also explain why the open lower port doesn’t seem to create an exhaust leak. Hope it’s a stainless or brass tube.

Down below there’s a threaded port extending from the bottom of the manifold. If takes a brass adaptor that threads in. The tube has a flared end, compression fitting so the brass adaptor has a female compression seat. I’m still waiting on the fitting to arrive and once I get it hooked up I’ll dive into the choke unit to see what shape it’s in.
