The rear gear in the 65 I bought was acting like it had a spool in it, when you turned, it would drag the inner wheel. I tried adding friction modifier and that didn't help, so I said it must have a spool. I located another sure-grip to put in the car. When I pulled the original pumpkin, it was a s-g. What would be making it act like a spool? I would like to put the original pumpkin back in the car, so, would it be better to try and rebuild the original s-g or just buy a new s-g unit and install it? The original case is a 741 and I have a 489 in it now.
Thanks,
Daryl (cwmoss)

It's possible that someone rebuilt it or remachined (cone type) and added shims or added an extra disc to a clutch type. What one do you have and where abouts in Texas are you? I'm in Pasadena and work on rear ends....

Cranky,
Thanks for the response. I sent you an e-mail the other day asking if you did this for people. It probably didn't go thru as I have been having problems with my service.
It's a 741 case, looks to be the original for the car, a 65 Belvedere II with a stick.
What would I need to check to get you more info?
I am in Caldwell, next to Bryan-College Station.
Thanks,

Don't see anything in my email inbox. You're not too far...but not too close either. PM your phone number and I can call and walk you through the disassembly to check what's going on or if you don't want to dig into it....I can. Do you ever come out this way? A friend of mine goes to College Station a lot to visit family and you and he could meet up and he could bring it to me. They are not hard to work on but there's few things that you need to know in order to get them back together without pulling your hair out lol. Do you have the cone type or clutch type SureGrip? The cone type has only one window in the carrier and you can see springs inside and the clutch type has several windows and no springs....

I got it....when would be a good time to call? Can't today tho....

Cranky,
Best to ring me anyday after 6pm. I took a pic or two and could send them to you.
Thanks,
Daryl (cwmoss)
