This is listed on Craigslist locally.

It's about 20 min from me. The transmission is a basket case and a 23 spline at that. I talked to the owner and it needs 1st-2nd cluster replaced. I'm wanting it to convert my 68 charger to 4-speed. I know the linkage won't work. I'm fine with rebuilding the transmission. The price seems a bit high for a transmission in this condition, but I'm a little new to Mopar prices. Could I find a better deal at the Sacramento or Mopar alley shows later this year? Thanks for any and all help.

After taking a look at the craigslist ad I would stay away at that price. Just the way the parts are thrown in a pile in a box shows they don't give a crap. That is a $75-100 parts pig. You will be better off finding a complete one at a show or on a forum.
Because you are looking to do a conversion you may want to look for someone selling a complete setup.

If it is out of an E-body it won't work in a B-body shifter mount on tail shaft is wrong! You can find a good working one not much more money!

You are so correct here sir.

Actually an E-body tranny has dual shifter bosses for both E and B.
If you know what your looking at as far as what are all the parts for an 833 and it looks complete I'd offer him 200.00

An E body trans will work just fine in a B body! The tail housing has 2 shifter mounting pads cast onto the tail shaft, front is for B body and rear is for E body.

How about a TKO Tremec 5 post 2010 vintage? 4 with an extra gear for overdrive.

Thanks guys. Glad to get confirmation of my thoughts on it.

I long considered a 5 speed conversion, but for the use/abuse this transmission is surely in for, I'm not sure a 5-speed will handle it, plus I can't say I'm really keen on the idea of any changes to my torsion bar crossmember or floorpan to fit it.

There was a B body A833 local to me that he put on CL. He wanted $300 but I'm not sure he still has it. He only used it to look for a driveline vibration. It was a working unit with some miles but it did work. If you have a box of parts, it's a $100-150 max.

FYI: There is no 1st-2nd gear cluster. The cluster gear is the long gear that sits near the bottom of the transmission and meshes with all the gears. Not cheap to replace. I'll add to the group that says "keep on looking".
