Well, my best friend came over Saturday to install the Poly. We were all set to go, I got everything ready. But there was one thing I never checked and thought I had. You see, I have the 65 Poly, I got a 70 727 TF, and I got a torque converter with a 2800 stall. I also got a new flex plate. The flex plate bolted up to the crankshaft, np, but ooops... it was the wrong bolt pattern for my TC. So I checked all around, and we found one in Riverside and made the 30 mind trek to get it. Brought the other flexplate and TC to double check. Whew, found one that fit.

Weird thing is the first guy told me his part number was Z197, but didn't have it. Next guy told me his part number was FA303 but didn't have it. Next guy had a FA303 but said that was for a 904. So I had him look it up and he said it should be FA309. So I found an FA309 and went to get it, and he didn't have it. Crap. So I asked him to look up the application just in case since the other guy gave me the part number. He looked up by 70 RR with a 440 and 727 TF and came up with FA303. He brought it out and it fit my TC and matched the crank pattern from the other flexplate, so I brought it home and it worked.

Here are a couple pics....

So... got it installed, made all my finalizations, and tried to start it. Hmmm... seems the engine builder gave it back to me at TDC - 180º. Flip the distributor... friend dropped the dist hold-down and it took 25 minutes to find it! lol

Got it back together, adjusted the carbs a little and got it started!

But here's the bad news. There's a bad noise like something is hitting or grinding, and have no idea what it is. So it's off to my friend's shop tomorrow on a flatbed so he can figure out the problem and tune the carbs.

But I got it running at least!!! Hope the noise is something minor...

And the custom air cleaner I built (needs to be welded). This is my first crack at metal fabrication (other than brackets!)

Very nice. You've got to tell us about the first guy that asks if it's a Big Block.

Thanks. I was told by Cope that with my 70 trans and the new TC (from Cope Racing Trans) to ask for a big block flexplate with 727, because the TC has the 10" bolt pattern instead of 11".

All I know is ... it fit!

Your mystery noise...Check the TC bolts, they may be hitting the inside of the tranny dust/inspection cover. Take it off and look at the inside, you'll see the marks if the bolts are hitting.

When you change flex plates and convertors they have different clearances than the stock units. You may have to modify this cover, cutting some metal away, or tapping it out a little.

When this cover is off also check the TC bolt clearance to the block. TC bolts do not use washers and you should have at least 1/8" clearance, less will work just make sure it's not hitting.

Thanks, Nick.. I'll check that. I started the car up again, no noise until it got warm, then I could hear it again. It's not as bad as before, but still there. I also think I need more ATF. A friend said with my set up probably about 12-14 quarts on a fresh, dry trans, deep pan, new TC. I'm wondering if that could be causing the noise?

I'm so used to my _____, with the 4 Cyl and Man Trans. I can replace those engines/trans' all day long and no problem. This is my first V8/Auto... but it's sooooo kewl!

Cant wait to see more pics. Let us know what you find out concerning the noise.

hey ploy 318 guy... any more updates on your noise issues?
i started my motor up last night can had the some type of noise... did you every figure out what your noice came from?

Good job weathering the storm and getting it fired. A couple of things on the grinding, without seeing or hearing it. From the back it could be converter bolts hitting the inspection cover or from the front we've had an issue before where we ran too bolts that were too long in the crank pulley and they actually gouged the timing chain cover. Your on your own for internals.
