So last night I decided to make sure my old 65 driveshaft will fit into the 70 trans, and it went in about 4 inches and then stopped. Then I took it to the 65 trans and it slides in all the way. So I checked the 70 again and same thing.

I keep reading that the trans slip yoke is the same for all 727's, but the 65 is a little different. There are two diameters to the splined shaft. At one end it's 1-11/16 like it's supposed to be, but about 3 inches back it's slightly larger.

I am planning to get the engine/trans in this weekend... if I can't get this driveshaft resolved... I won't be driving it!

It's always something!

Well, it is small block... original 318, 70 trans is small block too. I called a shop and they said it might be a bushing issue, so I'm going to check that out.

thanks..

Okay, so I removed the tail shaft housing. It would have been nice if the tranny shop had told me there was a SNAP RING that needed to be spread in order to accomplish this!!

It seems that the slip yoke is not getting past the bushing because it's a little larger in diameter about 3 inches back.

Everyone I've spoken to says, "I've never seen that". sheesh. Wish I had tried this sooner!

Crap, I told you about the snap ring in a PM but it looks like I was too late and you already figured that part out!

As for the other, no idea! You can get replacement tailshaft bushings and see if it will fit both the shaft (before you press it in!) and the housing.

I took my TS housing and the driveshaft to a driveline specialist, he said he has never seen anything like it. He grabbed a new slip yoke and it fit inside the housing with no problems. He tried mine and it got stuck on the bushing. Then he mic'd it and saw it was not exactly round and was baffled.

But the kewl part is that since it was a 35 minute drive, he sold me the new yoke, installed with a new ball joint and did it while I waited so I wouldn't have to make the drive back!

So, if this is allowed here... prideful plug: Banning Driveline here in Banning, California. banningdriveline.com

I also found a speedometer gear/housing/retainer for $25 locally. It pays to have friends who have friends!

Good deal!

I have a great shop here in Wichita called Powerdrive that does mine.

The counter guy argued with me that I didn't need a 7260/7290 conversion joint yet sheepishly admitted when I went to pick it up that I was right.

It helps to have good local shops that know their stuff!

We are still talking about transmissions and driveshafts, right?

Gawd I hope so.... the guy was a nice man, but ... uh ...

no.

Anyhoo... getting ready for the big day Saturday... got everything done except that damn steering column bushing!! He said he sent it on 3/12, but it's still not here so I can't put the column in yet.
