Bugged, indeed! But only in the insect sense of the word. I went to refill my coffee mug about 0730 this morning and noticed something shimmering in the Oklahoma sunrise just outside my kitchen window. There it was, dangling by one wing from its exoskeleton; a newly emerged Cicada (some still call them locusts). I took a few snapshots since you don't usually see the bug; just what it leaves behind. They're supposed to crawl out of the shell and hang for a while until their bodies and wings harden enough to fly. I know some of you folks will enjoy these photos.

Cool photos mechanic. I love the sound of cicadas in the evening .. as long as there's not a plague of them right in my tree. I like to hear them from a distance.

Thanks. I agree on the sound of one or two. Its relaxing if they're not too close by. Funny story; when we were little kids I fooled my little sister into thinking the "locust shells", as we called them, were Pork Rinds like Dad always ate. She bought it and ate a few before Mom came outside and figured out what was going on. Mom told me to get a switch and began the beating. Ouch! I still don't think it deserved a switch. Maybe a few licks with Dad's belt, but a switch?

Still, it was funny.

Oh man, so, you were just as mean to your sister as I was!? Mine is 4 years older than me too lol. Never got her to eat any of those but my buds and I used to catch them and tie a thread on and fly em around. Take em in the house and watch sister scream! :D

A little devious maybe, but never mean. I should've been i sales.

My family moved to OKC when I was five. We would visit my Mom's parents in Chickasha and have fried chicken. Fresh, if yo know what I mean. Grandpa would chop the legs off and give then to me to terrify the girls with. I's chase them around pulling the tendon that flexed the foot. Great fun and cheap, too.

It looks like an alien invasion at my place with all those damn things. I put them up there with crickets in the annoying factor.

Yes, it's warmer there in TX. They've just started coming out here in OK metro. Like Cranky said,a few are OK but a plague, forget about it.

****UPDATE***

Breakfast is served. Yep, the birds, a squirrel, or some other critter had juicy morsel for breakfast. Because I just went out to take another photo and the whole thiog was gone. I looked on the ground but nothing but the whole it crawled out of. Life can be harsh.

Well at least isn't it only like every 17 years or something like that anyway ??, if I remember my Animal Planet or National Geographic TV shows correctly... I hate bugs of any kind, except maybe Praying Mantis...

I may have my bug species wrong too...

Ouch !! And I thought I was a mean/cruel brother... {I had 3 younger, 2 were adopted & 2 older sisters, 2 younger step brothers}, the younger ones were fun to mess with, I must admit... the older ones were damn tattle-tells thou...

It might be 7 yrs? Doesn't matter because every year a new batch comes out the ground.

And quite possibly the only song that has the word Cicada in it is Grateful Dead's Terrapin Station. Here is the verse:

From the northwest corner
of a brand-new crescent moon
crickets and cicadas sing
a rare and different tune

Terrapin Station

But it seems that yours wasn't singing.

More like crying for help.

I don't mind the noise they make. I am in Mo now. We have them here normally I have not noticed very many this year. I was raised a little south of you where we had lots of them there.
