Just blew the 3.55's in my 8 3/4 on the highway. I like to cruise with my car as well as smoke when the urge/need arises. Any suggestions on the replacement rear/gears? Car presently has a 440 stroked to 500 with a 3500 stall converter in it.

Ratio?
Dana?
Strange S60?

Please advise. Thanks in advance.

4:10s cruising locally.3:54s if you travel any distance. That convertor would love the 4:10s

I see Moser has a nice Dana 60 built any way you want. That is if you have a little over $2000 burning a hole in your pocket. I would go 3.55s so it's a little more drivable on the freeway. JMHO

Blown bogie

If it's an automatic car you don't need or want the expense or weight of the Dana. The 8-3/4 is fine. The Dana was put into the four speed cars to handle the shock of launching the car under extreme conditions with slicks. The motor sounds like it's built pretty good so that's no problem. The Stall convertor says it all! If you can live with the slip around town, then a 3:73 would be the best of street and highway. The convertor and the higher ratio takes alot of load off of the parts, unless you hook up with slicks on concrete! 4:10's are a little rough on the gas guage! Good luck!

A stroked 440 with even 355 393 gears are going to still give you the "smoke when the urge/need arises" And make your gas prices more manageable..

A Canadian I know might ask "Do you still have the ring your mother gave you" lmao

Who can figure that one out first? lol

Anyway, go with a Dana 60 and some 355's you wont be sorry and will have a mice cruiser.

The day my 8-3/4 breaks I am switching to that set up, $1200 $1500 worth it in the long run.

lmao you guys kill me!!!

i would say an 8 3/4 as well, with 3.73's.

unless you have a little extra cake, then you could go with a strange S60 and not mess around.

that's the same setup I have in mine with automatic trans.

TruBee, you didn't say what rear tire size you have. If you're running 255/60/15 (27") tall or shorter with an automatic, 3.55's are good to go. If you're running 275/60/15 (28") tall, I suggest using at least 3.91's. I had 3.91's in mine with 245/60/15's in the rear and went to both the 3.55's and 275/60/15's all at once. I wish I would have left the 3.91's in so I can get a bit more seat of the pants feel. With the taller tires, the 3.91's would still manage O.K. on the highway.

Everyone else I talked to, seems to agree with your position on the fact the car being auto. Thus, it looks like I'll be getting a new set-up from randy, and throwing it in the 8 3/4. Thanks for everybody's input!

I strongly suggest that you change the title of this thread.

Exactly what happened to the old rear? A properly set up 8 3/4 should handle the power. How much does the car weigh? Even a 60 will puke if it's not set up right but when they are, it's usually there for a very long time. And I've noticed that so many think they weigh 2 tons or something....truth is, they are usually only about 45-50 lbs more than an equally equipped 8 3/4.

I tend to agree, the 8.750" & 3.73:1 is a great comprimize, I have also used a bunch of Dana 60's also, even with Auto cars, the last one was a Strang-S60, something like $2500, after all said & done, any gear {I used 3.73:1, Yukon}, spring perches added, Cast Aluminum Strange strong back style cover & a Eaton Locker, thicker DOM tubes, I reused my own brakes, bolted right in, except needed to shorten the driveshaft an inch or so {8.750" car originally}, lasted me 3 years with 800+hp, hard 5000rpm trans-brake launches @ 8.58/156mph passes in a 3500+lb car for several years before I sold it, it's still going strong, now almost 3 years later... If you go to an Aluminum 742 MP carrier, pro or quality gears, a locker, better/thicker tubes, rear truss & good axles, you will spend that much easily on a properly built "bullet proof 8.750" rear end"... or a Moser 8.750" fabbed housing & axels $1070, plus all the other stuff...
