Kick Down Adjustment on 727 70 RoadRunner ?????

What is the normal pressure you want on your kick down rod when you put it on the carb.? Does more pressure on it make it shift faster are slower? I don't think I've ever had mine just rite, it has all ways shifted slow. Thanks for any info. are suggestions on this. Ronnie in Toasty Okla.

An easy way to do it, is to disconnect the kick-down rod at the carburetor, have somebody get in the car and hold down the gas pedal to the floor, (keeping it floored), now get the kick down linkeage and shove it towards the firewall as far as it'll go...the slotted back portion of the linkeage should be just resting on the pin of the carb...if it's too far forward the shifts will be drawn out, (too much pressure), if it shifts too soon...and in some cases no kick-down....the rod will have to be lengthened, (turn the threaded rod counter clock wise until the back portion of the slot just rests on the pin...again with the carb at wot. This is with the car not running...of course. This is provided you have the correct linkeage to the trans. in the first place.

Copied from someone elses post on Moparts but I have done this and it works great.

If you have the 3 peice linkage here is how you adjust it. Step 1. remove the rod from pivot point that goies down to tranny. Get a drill bit. you'll see a hole in your pivot bracket. insert the drill bit through the bracket and pivot arm to lock it. Now adjust that lower rod that you took off the pivot earlier. adjust it so it will snap back on the pivit with out any downward pressure, in it's natural position. Step 2. remove the drill bit. Move throttle to wide open position. adjust the rod from throttle stud to pivot so you have apro 1/8 play. You don't want to jamb the rod down tight. At wide open throttle you should be able to push that rod aprox another 1/8 inch. Hook your return spring back up and go for a ride. If it shifts a tad to late adjust it for more end play. On the 3 peice set up that lower rod needs to be adjusted to get correct geomotry. Thats why you start with the drill bit in pivot. Thats why those holes are there.

The way it operates is when line pressure in v.body overcomes governor pressure, it shifts. So if you are driving down the road with constant pressure on the gas pedal. and it seems like your trans is hanging on, shifting from second to 3rd let off the gas a bit this reduces line pressure and encourages the shift. Or in simple terms loosen the kickdown slightly.

I'm assuming the one-piece rod works under the same principle, just without the adjustability? Mine wants to downshift at part-throttle cruise. It only drops for a split-second and could be misinterpreted as a stumble, which is what I did for a long time until I loosened up the rod at the carb. Then I had NO kickdown and slippage.
I'm using a small bolt/nut and a couple of star washers inside the slot for adjustment, is the proceedure basically the same?

I had to do the same thing on mine,adjusted it by FSM, couldn't get enough adjustment with out putting the nut and bolt in the slot, The linkage was not hooked up on the car when I got it,the slotted rod was in a box of extra parts.PO didn't re connect after having trans rebuilt,wonder why the trans went up?I got a newly rebuilt 727 with a transgo kit in it so I am just going to keep driving this one until it goes.WOT in 1st and it hits 2nd at about 4500 RPM.

Also, a simple rule: longer rod means later shifts, shorter rod, means shorter shifts.

Actually its throttle press works agains gov press to control the shift points. Ron
