I don't mean to jack this thread, but this has been a problem for me too. I'm having a hard time getting my rod adjusted (and the trans kickdown lever too. HA). The problem is that the instructions I've followed from various sources like Chiltons, forums, the old guy down the block who knows EVERYTHING, are a bit too vague. Simple is great, I prefer it. But when simple doesn't work out, a little bit of theory can help get a universal adjustment to work in individual circumstances.
When mine is adjusted "correctly", as the manual specifies, my throttle valve gets confused and tries to downshift during part-throttle cruise: it will downshift for a split second. It's unnerving, annoying, and not likely good for the tranny. BTW, I recently started driving this car (76 Cordoba) daily, about 40 mi/day. It was a backup and a "project", but now its the only vehicle I have. All the quirks that were acceptable for the once-a-week cruise around the neighborhood are now showing themselves as real issues.
If I leave everything all loosey-goosey, it stops doing that, but I can tell it's slipping and I have to downshift manually for acceleration from anything but a dead stop. I know the kickdown or tv rod is for a lot more than "passing gear", its gotta be adjusted correctly to regulate fluid pressure throughout all throttle positions. I can't afford to burn up my trans, I gotta get this thing right before I do some damage.
Thanks,
