Has anybody upgraded or thought about upgrading to LED taillights to make our taillights more modern/brighter? i'm in the process of trying it since the 67 RT taillight housings are so big you can actually fit trailer led brake lights inside the housing with a little trimming of the trailer light outer mounting surface without damaging or changing The original housings not quite done yet still experimenting but they are definitely alot brighter than what we have now

LED Tail lights . . . additional side note . . .

If you're considering changing out your current bulbs for LED bulbs, please take note -

You will probably have to upgrade your flasher units to electronic flashers.

Here's the reasoning - the original bulbs pulled more current then the LED bulbs, as a result, the standard flashers would heat up, and break the circuit, causing the light to flash ( blink ). The LED bulbs pull far less current, and will probably not cause the element to heat up, so the lights will stay on and not flash ( blink).

Search for electronic flashers - they only cost about $12.95 . . . on the same site.

One more item to be aware of - the flashers have a polarity - the (+) and the (-) must be hooked up correctly to get the flasher unit to work. If it doesn't work, they will try and sell you a polarity switching plug for $2.00 - you don't need it - simply pop the old pins out of the connector ( there should be a small tab holding them in place - you can usually trip it with a very small screwdriver ) - and swap the location of the two pins.

Hopefully this will save you some headaches and a couple bucks while your upgrade your tail lights.

P.S. - you'll love the difference and there will be no doubt that you're stopping
( which also makes me feel better so I won't get rear-ended ).

Several people on here have converted all their exterior and interior lighting to LED.

This is one of the more popular sources for direct swaps

X2 on superbrightleds. I have used them on numerous occasions for my daily driver cars, my dad's cars, and some friend's cars. I have never had problems with them. On one occasion they sent me a bad led bulb and I called them up and within two or three days I had a replacement at my door no charge, no hassle.

One thing you do need to pay attention to when ordering led's is that they are directional. There are various types of led bulbs out there and you need to get the best one for your application. As far as one for your taillight goes, you would want one that best utilizes the reflector that is built into your taillight housing. You do not want one that is just lighting one direction straight back if that makes sense.

I have them in my dash and i love them, you do need to change your 4-way and regular turn signal flashers to use them as tail light bulbs, ive thought about it but i hear many negative things about them from dangerous because how the shine and how someone sees them behind you, I don't know whats fact and what isint, they are inviting and unless they make the lenses different now ah-days i cant see why they would be a problem of any sort, there brighter and i would think that would be a better factor...

If you don't want to go LED this article has great recommendations

Hats off to Dan hell of a write up. I very quickly ran into those issues I'm still in pursuit of a brighter taillight next thing will be a 3496 bulbs.
I too have been sitting at stop lights in the daytime an had cars locking them up and going sideways behind me thought they were just dumb asses but my son was following home from a recent car show and he said that with sun being so bright and on the right angle with the 67 r/t taillights having that grill look if he didn't know were the brake lights were he could see other people having a hard time seeing them that's what got me started on this subject.

I was behind a late-model Mustang with LED lights, and was surprised to see several of the lamps burned out on one side. I thought LEDs lasted just about forever, but I was told they are very sensitive to moisture and if your light housing isn't completely sealed and moisture can get it, it'll destroy the LEDs far faster than the same amount of moisture would damage regular bulbs.

Bruzilla, that is true because the led strips were exposed for a long time. LED technology has been advancing and getting better. I believe they have tried to address that issue with the bulb pictured below. I am guessing they developed this bulb with older cars in mind. I have not tested them out yet, but I like how they are thinking about us.

i bought a kit from DIGI-TAILS digital taillights. it came in a whole kit. 2 led panels 4 rubber grommets 1 power wire 1 pigtail tail harness 1 crimp 2 mounting studs and it came with electronic no-load flasher. i am still wiring up the whole car so i dont have it hooked up yet but the kit seem pretty nice. led tails can be switched to solid lights or blink in sequential. comes with 7 page instruction sheet.

PulmcrazyRR Who makes that Bulb you have in the picture ?

Thanks for the link, I just got a hold of the 3496 bulbs that Dan talked about looks like there brighter then the 1157's the real test will be tonight. we'll see

Digi-tail & www.HitechledProducts.com both these were for 68 RR or GTX Belvedere Satellites, I have tried either yet... I will probably go with the 1157 LED bulb & electronic flasher replacement instead front & rear, keep the stock light sockets & housings, too bad someone wasn't repoping the front driving/blinkers & housings for 68-69 B-Bodies Belv. GTX RR Sat., the old ones & used ones, seems they are all crap usually & I wish there were someone/something reproducing them, that was a good replacement, for the whole front Blinker/Driving light assembly....
