Left handed wheel lugs?

I believe that all mopars back to the early 60s up to , I think 1970 had left hand lugs on the right side of the vehicle, front and rear. Some one will let us know if this is wrong.

iirc, 72 was the last year and yup, left side only.

For what it's worth- Ma Mopar did this so owners could turn the lug wrench toward the rear of the car on both sides to remove; at least that's the story I got from my uncle that spent 30+ years working for Chrysler. Guess our Ma didn't think much of the smarts of most new owners back then...lol

Actually, it was to keep loose lug nuts from coming totally off. If you've ever had one come loose on the left side, it'll come completely off in short order with right handed threads. A loose nut will never spin completely off on the right and won't on the left either if it has left handed threads.

Thats what I was told too........ Keeps them wanting to get tighter not looser when wheels are spinning.
Only thing that sucks is that everyone wants to sell them in a 4 pack,,,, never 5 in a pack!

That is total B.S. !! freakin pissed me off when i needed to buy lug nuts for my front wheels only ... i told the guy on the phone " what the hell do you mean packs of 4 ? .... i need 10 ! ... what kind of gimmic is this, bullshit .. " ... so i had to buy 3 packs ... so stupid !

all studebakers are the same way too, I think Chrysler copied it from them. Does anyone know where to get the shank style lug nuts for weld draglights in left hand thread. I bought these wheels for my polara and haven't been able to find lug nuts for the drivers side and would rather not swap out to right hand thread studs.

got mine at Summit racing.

Military run left handed threads on there larger trucks and trailers.

Thanks, Cranky- after lo these many years now I got the straight scoop. Now that I think about it, it does make sense...

Yeah, and never try to take an old Mopar to a Red Front tire dealer, Too young and too dumb.
It's nothing new. From what I understand, Chrysler quit using left handed lugs because so many shops broke them including new car dealerships.

Its not like ferd and cheby had a rash of wheels falling off! Stoopid idea!
In 68 I was driving my dad's Chevy pickup and kept hearing a thump thump thump so I pulled over and started checking things and found the left front wheel with the lug nuts at the very end of the lugs....all of them on that wheel were in the same state. I was in a neighborhood so I was driving pretty slow. Have no idea why they were loose. I think my dad had a flat earlier in the week and pulled into a service station (remember those?) to get it fixed. I don't recall a rash of it happening but one time is too many. Last year I saw a 18 wheeler tire bouncing down the freeway heading for some unlucky bastard....

You're welcome, Jim.
