Hello all... I have a harbor fright lift I bought about ten years ago and its strapped to my heavy duty steel 2000 #table on special HD castors for movement.

I really like this type for lifting setup... a cherry picker takes up to much floor space.

According to the manufacture of the lift its rated for 1000#s

I am assuming that rating is the steel tube boom and cable.

I does anybody think 1200#s would be stretching it to much?

I have 800# hemi on it as the picture shows.

Whats the general consensus on the Lifts ratings.....?

USUALLY a lifting device will do 150% of rating. If it drops what your lifting is it worth the chance???
 
I don’t know but I would load the table up with heads engine blocks anything heavy so it won’t tip since it’s not bolted down

The little lift is bolted to the engine cradle holding the engine its self... test to see what the cable will hold..... that's why they are colluding..... that's not illegal.... only in politics...........

getting back to the question is what i would like to hear...

The cable and steel both collaborating there strength in tandem safely beyond there proposed limits.

so far I got about 50% from the first contestant... :>)

Should we consider the hydraulic cylinder too?

I just don’t know what you’re going on about but I do know the best way to rust the inside of a new engine is to wrap it in plastic

The picture was taken just after the dyno a year ago....

Here it is just before taking it home with the plastic ........:>)

The engine looks like this ever since....last two pictures but covered with two wool army blankets.

FWIW, I would think the cylinder should take it. The weldments are likely the weak link. Also, it looks like you are applying force right to the center of that mast tube. Maybe check the opposite side with a straight edge and see if it's deflecting with weight. You don't need a kink starting there.

This 1-1/2 ton long ram has no issue with a 440 with 4 speed attached or some light weight double duty shown here....

I have a one ton bridge crane in my shop. I don't tempt fate, I keep the load under the rating.

First off the lift was meant for a pickup bed and not a cherry picker.

The pick bed could only hold maybe 100 lbs before crushing the bed floor.

I cut the heavy rotating tower holding the boom down so there was no leaning one way or the other.

1/2 bolts to a half inch plate table 10X5 with heavy duty castors for easy mobilization of table

I cut a shim so there would be no slop (critical) it rotates smoothly 360 degrees.

like i said 1000 lbs easily.

The crank handle could be extended another inch or two

Used it to lift my Dana rear end

The base is fortified enough as it is seen i picture below.

They $160 at HF

The big-arse cherry picker I have is the type where the legs can be lifted and pinned back into the
uprights, where it then can be stored against any wall pretty much flush.
In my case, it tucks right in beside one of my 8x8 columns and is never in the way.

It may be Chinese, but it supposedly has some serious capacity.... :)
 
Ever inspect/ change cable, they don't last forever.

The cable has never had any load on it due to the 100 load restriction on my truck.

Guess I will test load it with no motor to 1400 lbs If it fails I will buy another and that will be the price of knowing........ if no other suggestions here.

For what I need (occasional engine removals, car lifting from an end, etc.) it does just fine,
especially for the money AND for the peace of mind.
 
What limitation? The fact you can move it around and into place?

Putting my offshore wonder (Not the Dutch woman) to the test lifting an A833 and a few other things!

I am 75 had one that for many years of restoring cars many 20+ years ago.

I use it also to pull 4x4 fence poles out of the ground that were cemented in. Worked like a charm.

I could fold it up and put in my 77 Bu-hog (Buick) trunk closed.

My picker was the type you pull it apart and they were stored the legs upright out of the way.

They still are to cumbersome for me to manage.... I like the setup I have personally.
