a little context......

my parents were in their mid 40s when I arrived on the scene; so there is an entire generation between us. I have siblings 20 years older than me. one of my father's good friends was a retired mechanic when I was a kid, and I remember being in Mr P's garage many times. My older brothers were friends with Mr P's son, Bob.

Well Bob is a car guy, and he stops in now and then to see what I'm up to. He's sometimes sporting his 54ish Olds convertible, a very nice show/driver. He has been cutting up and restoring Oldsmobiles for 50 years and currently has a project going on that I have helped with on occasion.

I happened to pass buy the old Mr P homestead this morning and Bob, who is 79 years young was on a step ladder cleaning gutters; so I pulled in to yell at him and hold onto the ladder.

when he was done, he says "you never saw this one"........ we go into the old garage and his 1940 Olds is there under a plastic cover, he had restored it in the 70s. He said it was rusty at the time, just like what we deal with on our cars. Then in a wooden "box" he had an original 68 Olds 98 survivor. Pretty cool stuff.

Halfway through your story I had thoughts of another December Giveaway! (Glad I was wrong).

You gotta love the Old Timers especially if they are car guys! Most of the ones I used to associate with have passed on. Learn the history from them while you can.

Thanks for sharing

Mercy! That's some sweet stuff right there.
Yep, I concur. In GM world, make mine an Olds. I had a handful in much younger years and always
thought they were just put together the best of that herd.

My mom's family drove them. My favorite was my Uncle Harry's '57 Super 88 two door hardtop with a J-2 engine. He traded a frumpy '50 Dodge for that car. My cousin Larry, who was a real life version of Eddie Haskel, talked him into it, the car was a left over dealer demonstrator, so my frugal uncle figured it was a good deal. Larry street raced the car on Sunrise Highway on Long Island during his teen years. His folks knew about it, but looked the other way, because he was doing so well in school. He went on to be a successful electrical engineer, and had a '67 Charger as his first new car.

That and the early 60s Buicks, 63 - 64 Rivis are built like a tank.
Double door skins bolted on, rear diff looks like it came from a 3/4 pickup.
That and the big old nail head. Lol

Friends of my parents had a '61 Buick Electra they got as a hand me down from the wife's rich family. That car still rode silently, without a trace of a squeak or rattle, when it nine years old.
