Here's what i had:

3:91 rear (741)
509 purple cam
eddy torker II manifold
3500 stall
holley 750dp
383
ported 906 heads
1 3/4 headers to 3 inch pipes

Motor spun bearing in main cap...

So i found a 400 block and swapped internals over
replaced 509 cam w/ slightly higher than stock (not sure the lift/dur.)
replaced the 3500 stall w/ 2400
replaced the 750dp w/ holley 650 street avenger elec. choke
replaced the torker II eddy w/ performer 383
replaced the 391's w/ 373's
running 275 60's in rear

It runs good...but I miss the lopey sound ..What cam should i go w/ as i was told by a few members that the 509 was too radical for a 383..

I still have the 3500 stall convertor and the 509..
i would like to keep the change minimal if possible..
Thanks in advance

.557 solid with 3,500 stall converter, RPM intake/or go back to previous intake manifold, and 750DP. Can pick up crane ductile rockers off Moparts.com in the used/race parts section usually pretty cheap. Guy has 1.6's (just missing one rocker) for $260 now.. Would bring the lift up to .594 and still have great street manners with mild duration and a loose LSA. Would also work well with your tall gear set. Cam and lifter kits are only $199 for the 'purple shaft' cam series. I get 14MPG on the interstate with the .590MP and my mods, can't see why you would switch from a 750DP to an EDDY!!!? Only got 17MPG with factory 8:1 440 and .480 comp cam with an open 3.23 diff! The .509 is mild.. The .590MP is tame in my 440 in a street car... Best sounding hyd. cam would be the Comp XE/HL series though.. They have very fast ramp rates and sound just like a solid, but require adjustable rockers which defeats the purpose. I had the XE285HL. .590MP solid dominates anything I have nearly ever heard from ANY manufacture though in the 'lope' department :headbang:

By the way, Direct Connection had a test done with a duster that had an 8.5:1 400 w/ M1 intake, 850 holley, stage V heads (cast iron, barely flowed better than stock), 727 with factory high stall converter, ?cant remember gear? 4.10?, with slicks. They went through all the MP cams, and the .590MP solid out performed them all in a combination it would be deemed a complete dog.. Ended up running in the 11.4's. Just some food for thought..

The short stroke 383 and 400 really respond well to a cam with some overlap. That is if you want the upper RPM power and put a few 440's and an occasional street hemi on the trailer. The .474" hemi grind cam is a good one for dual purpose, and if you don't mind adjusting valves every now and then, the .528" is also excellent. Only thing about the .528 is it will like more gear, so if you plan to stay with the 3.91's I'd run the .474".

i didn't go to an eddy carb..i stayed with holley, just went to a 670 street avenger from 750dp..and rebuilt the rear, and chose 373's as the old ones were chewed up. Also, the compression is 9.5:1 i believe
is there a significant difference between 391's and 373's to warrant what cam to choose?

Well, not really unless your at the tack racing for money. While it can be advised to look into a better suited cam for the job, you could get away with it as is.
IMO, I would look to a smaller cam for a more streetable car matching it up to the lower converter and gear ratio change.

Something like a MoPar 280/.480?

That a nice cam for the job

if you have any interest in a solid, i have a new comp cams and lifters 282-.495 magnum i'd like to sell. this would make a very nice and versatile 383 camshaft.

sorry, for some reason thought you said Eddy carb! The .528MP solid is basically a tamed .509 (as you subtract the additional lift with lash, and add the loose LSA). It will make more power, just due to the nature of solids. I would go with the 296/557MP solid w/ 252* duration @ .050 as it has a mild 110* LSA. Powerband 3,000-6,700RPM. It will give you the lope you are looking for, a 112* LSA as in the .528MP solid just won't cut it. The .528 solid may be better if you want a nice cruiser though, that smooths out as soon as you touch the gas from a red light with a wide power band. I wouldn't do the work to install anything smaller than the .557, it has been proven a great street solid cam.
