Looks like it's time for a Dana

Last fall I broke a Strange axle in my 8 3/4" on the D/S.

This year I was pulling my axles to change the carrier and discovered my Doctor Diff axle isn't fairing much better

SO I guess it's time for a Dana! Gotta LOVE MOPOWER!!!!!!
 
Certain things impress me. Axle splines that try to resemble a barbershop pole is one of them.
 
Wow....that's a long spline cut. So, what kind of power are you running that's doing in these axles lol?
 
Probably weight more than power. 4500 pounds 600 ft/lbs.
 
I twisted a stock Dana axle off in my '70 383 auto Roadrunner several years ago. I know I didn't have an incredible amount of horsepower but we had that 727 set up so that it slammed each gear hard enough to chirp the tires every time it shifted (even with your foot off the accelerator, idling around town). As a daily driver it eventually took it's toll. I'm running Strange axles in my Duster's Dana now and Moser axles in my Barracuda's Dana.

A buddy and I ran a 4 speed road runner in Super Street (10.90 index) back in 81-82 using stock Dana 60 axles and did that for probably the better part of the year before a tech inspector finally noticed and said no more. We were launching that @ 6k but it only weighed 3000 lbs. There was no tire slippage with the 14" slicks....
 
Yeah I'll probably have snow on the ground here by the time I get my Dana. At least I have one good Strange axle left here I can run till winter.

That will usually do it..

Against NHRA safety rules to run stock axles on anything running 10.99 and faster.....and this thing was running 10.70's in a 10.90 class. Super Street is one of the (3) .90' classes of Super Street (10.90 index), Super Gas (9.90) and Super Comp which is the 8.90 index of heads up racing. Back in the early 80's, very few had electronics and was more fun to race in IMO.
 
I believe they are 30 spline. That was a Doctor Diff axle.
 
I would build a Truck dana Housing and use Ford big bearings on the ends. This will solve a few problems. Bullet proof and a slightly less expensive job.
 
Only if you run a spool then you can run the 35 spline axle in the 8 3/4". Running a true track unit like I am uses the smaller 30 spline axle. The axle is the weak link.
 
Why did you build it with new axles and a 30 spl, I would have done the 33 spl and TT.

The difference in 30 to 33 spl are 2000 more ft lbs tq capability.

If you're going to change axles and traction devices it's always best at that point to go with the largest avail at that time, cost difference btwn 30 and 33 spl TT are dollars and cents, same with axles.

The cost to go 33 spl for both is less than the D-60

Who makes the 33 spline if I may ask? Didn't know there was an optional shaft with a TT
