low hum near water pump.in my 225 slant 6.

hi Bear R.- here.i have a low hum in idle what seems to be coming from the water pump/harmonic balancer area.any idea what this is?need to pin point this.its friggin driving me nuts.and getting tired of this one thing after another thing.i guess thats what happens when you get a ride that been sitting for 10 plus yrs..thanks and God Bless, Barry.

no ower steering.the hum goes away w bit of throttle.also goes away on its own most of the time.if i up the idle a bit it s gone.its when i set the idle down to where its suppose to be.youll hear "occationally"..thanks Bear R.-God Bless .

Is this an automatic car? A lot of times, the torque converter can get a little wear in it and hum like hell....it can radiate all the way through the carnk and can sound like it's RIGHT behind the radiator. Chevy powerglides were real bad about it.

Could be the start of a bad alternator bearing. I have used a long screwdriver with the handle against my ear to listen for problems in the past, used for over 30 years in the mills to check for bad bearings.

A screwdrived does work good......but I'll tell you something even better. A long 3/8 drive extension. It has no handle to insulate the sound. That's super important for me because I am very hard of hearing.
