Hi All,

So I thought I would start a project thread for my 68 Coronet.

I picked it up around Feb 2012, bit of a early mid life crisis. I decided to stop fkn around with imports and get my muscle car I'd always wanted. I'm not that brand loyal, I love almost all of the muscle cars from the late 60's early 70's. But my fav has always been a triple black 68 Charger.

My budget was never going to stretch to one of them, they are really expensive here, so I was just looking around to see what I could afford.

Originally I wanted a driver, rough was fine, but need to be driving so I could just register it and drive it as I fixed it up. Not much was tickling my fancy (or my budget) and I've always been a builder not a buyer so I started looking more and more at projects with the view of spending less, so I could put the cash into getting it on road quick.

Anyway long story short after looking at a few I didn't find anything 100% until I came across this. I flew over to look at it and was originally disappointed because it was rougher then I had hoped. I was tossing up between this and a 68 Cutlass small block, a driver, but with rear quarter rust. I decided on the Coronet even though it was a much bigger project because its that squarer more ballsy muscle look more very similar to the 68 Charger I'd always loved. Plus it was nearly rust free and after working on 1950 Plymouth was massive rust issues, I didn't want to deal with any serious rust issues.

Anyway here's some pics. When I get more time I'll update this with some more pics and details...

Nice very solid! that could be a very nice driver with minimal work. What are you going to put in it?

Very cool start, add drive train and enjoy

Very clean and nice looking car. Can I assume that this is going to be your triple black car?

looking real good and yes black would be real nice :headbang:

Very nice, i think you made a great choice in this one! Beautiful body style...

Thanks for the comments guys.

It wasn't in as good nic as it looks in the photo's, as is always the case. It had the crack down the leading edge of the drivers rear quarter like most. Also a very small rust hole in the passenger side rear window channel. Plus most of the soft parts of the interior, minus the seats, were rubbish.

It was pretty clear clear the person before me did a rush job on it. Including changing their mind about a 4 speed, to go back to an auto. Rather then fix the floor, they'd just riveted and seam sealer'ed a thin sheet of ali over the whole and bolted a B&M shifter over it. Here's the damage:

I ripped it our, cleaned it up and welded in a manual trans hump. I'm going to run the 727 that came with the car, but as a floor shift from the manual location. So a fake manual basically.

I forgot to take a shot of it welded in. But you'll see it when I show the shots of how the interiour is closer to now.

Heres an early pic I got of it from the seller, with a sneak peak of the trunk fulla goodies.

Oh I forgot to say, the other reason I didn't choose the Cutlass is that it has a face only a mother could love! lol I like the 69, but the 68, just didn't quite get it. But anyway!

So I had contacted an guy I knew through the hot rod scene that ran a local event and owned a body shop to see what paint would cost. Too much, but long story short I ended up getting it for a good price because he was looking at getting out of the body shop and thought he'd line up my 'Net for part for the transition to the new owner. Fine by me!

I was going to go with the lime colour from the later model with a black vinyl roof, but I couldn't go past black so after some serious saving and selling I got the cash together and put it in for paint:

Here's it in Primer:

Some more soon...

Yeah it came up nice, but I've got it back with out the final cut etc. The painter is going to come around once its back together and do any final touch ups and the final cut & polish. So at the moment it looks less mirror, but at least it means once it's back together and about to go on road, it will look like it has just been painted.

Thanks guys

Got a question, just finished rebuilding the heater box and what I'm guessing is a temp sensor has a busted board. I'm not sure if I can fix it with out it being really fragile.

Does anyone repo these?

Or does anyone know a good way to fix it?

:headbang:hell yes looking real good :headbang:

That is your blower motor resistor. It is what gives you the speeds for your fan. You could probably fix that one by gluing a phenolic board around the perimeter on the inside. Basically cut it the same size and hollow out the middle so it misses the coils then bond the two together it will be thicker by a 1/16th but should work fine.Radio Shack has the little boards around here. Let me know if you need any more explanation. Also used if you can find.
