OK so I've been looking at manual valve bodies, and I'm coming across people on internet saying things like your not supposed to launch or break torque in first gear with manual valve body???(that would be dumb). Also they say you aren't suppose to down shift through gears untilled you come to complete stop why? Wondering if anyone here is running one which brand and how much of this is true? Thanks.

I ran cheetah valvebodys on the street a few times. One on a column shift. You will be fine.

Who doesnt launch their car in first gear? I wanna see their 60 foot times.

That's what I'm saying. They say has something to do with a low band????? For first gear. They say if u burn out and then get traction you can gerenade the trans without this low band apply whatever that is. What do you think is better forward or reverse pattern, was gonna use the pro matic 2 ratchet shifter it can be used either way.

Both mine were reverse pattern. I was using factory shifters and one on the column. At the time forward pattern manual valve bodies were unheard of really. I liked the reverse but if are going wiith the pro matic 2 then I would do forward.

With any 727, your burnout should start in low and then shift to second ASAP. Breaking a u joint, rear end, axle, etc will cause possible catastrophic trans failure. I used the Turbo Action Cheetah valve bodies in bracket racers for years in some fairly high HP cars without incident. If you are using one on the street, just do not put it in first gear unless you are launching. Think of it as a manual transmission without a clutch pedal.

That's what I figured nothing special just u shift through gears. So I understand not to down shift to first unless in a complete stop but what about 3 to 2 I'd that OK? And what if u take off hard at stop sign break tires loose and wait for grip before shifting to second is that bad?

It would only be bad if you had a valve body that didn't have low band apply.

If you have one those valve bodies, then don't let off in first while it is spinning, shift to second while it is still spinning.

Yep.... what he said^........

Alright sounds like I need to make sure it has a low band apply.

john over at cope racing transmissions is a great guy to talk to.(link already provided)think of low band apply like locking the trans in the gear.if you let off the gass the eng will slow the car as the rpms drop.without an apply it is like going into neutral when you let off the gas in that gear.reverse vs forward pattern just depends on how you like to shift.reverse is easyer to shift while drag racing since you are pulling the shifter with the force of acceleration rather then pushing it forward in a normal forward pattern.

You need to be very honest with your intended use and SPEAK to an actual human when picking a valve body, in my opinion. Just going to summits website will get you in trouble because there are lots of different types of manual valve bodies.

For instance, mine is a forward pattern and has low band apply, so it basically is a normal street tranny that won't shift itself. Unlike some I've read about, mine NEEDS the kickdown linkage, something I found out the easy way. Mine wasn't adjusted correctly when i bought it and shifts were a little mushy. I adjusted it correctly and up and downshifts are now very firm. Also, if I downshift, maybe a bit prematurely at part throttle as I slow to a stop light, my valve body won't allow the tranny to downshift until the speed is right for the gear. Another thing I noticed is if I really get into the throttle while cruising at a low rpm in 3rd gear, the tranny will downshift, but only under those circumstances.

Yet the trans will not automatically upshift ever and will not automatically downshift except as noted above.

You can also do this and save a bundle.

I put this kit in my 68 GTX back in the early 80's. I recently took it apart to replace seals and check it out. (The car has set since 92). When I took it apart the thing is like the day I put it together back then. It has the low band apply and I also put the bolt in sprag back then. This kit is very easy to install just replace a couple of valves drill a couple of holes and you have a perfect forward shift stick auto. I could light em up smoking and shift anytime I wanted. Drive at 40 mph drop in low and smoke the hell out of the tires. Just remember you have to do the shifting the trans won't!

I've been more than happy with my Cheetah RMVB on the street :)

Up shift, down shift, launch in any gear :headbang:

Just gotta remember that if you get on it in 1st and spin, make sure you pull 2nd before letting off the gas or the overrun clutch will continue to spin up and possibly go boom the next time you get on it :sad1:

Here's a short video of me beating on mine after doing a recent overhaul :3gears:

Cheetah RMVB is hardest shifting simplest VB on the market. Ran a couple back in the day on the street. Never knew of the low band apply issue.. guess I was lucky.

Transgo-TF3 I installed recently on the other hand is a nightmare to install, shifts ok but nothing like the Cheetah RMVB's did. One of the valves that needs grinding in particular, is like get f*ck out. Transgo should include one already modified. And I can't even tell if the low band apply is working properly, so im still making sure to always shift to 2nd while under power from 1st gear, in any throttle situation.

Moral of the story, get a $185 Cheetah RMVB from Summit, your 727 will last forever, and run a trans blanket "just incase".

All of this low band apply stuff.. well if one day your "low band apply" VB decides to not function correct or your band slips ecetera you risk an explosion anyway................
