Master Cylinder Question

Hey guys, my problem is that my master cylinder has the lines exit on the engine side of the cylinder, but my new brake lines are meant for one that would exit towards the fender. So my question is what would be correct for my car? ('69 Charger R/T-SE, power front disc, drum rear)




The only info I could find was this over on DC.com but not sure if it's correct ?

Hey poppa-----------your question about why some had the lines going out and some in. This was a subject kicked around on here a lot. I think the end result was that on a disc brake car, the lines coming toward the engine were what was normally used-------leastways on a 69 charger RT with disc brakes. This master was real hard to find for a while but now is available in a repop from NAPA. I think thats the only place you can get it. The one with the lines going toward the fender will work just fine but wouldn't be "correct".

It was posted in a thread wanting pics of original engine compartments, but they were all split about 50/50 as far as what side the lines were on. :icon_scratch:

As in my brake lines are for a hemi setup or master cylinder? I thought a hemi setup would have lines on the fender side or?

my 68 charger had the brakes lines and MC ports on fender side and its not a hemi car

Yeah I'm still confused because my buddy has a '69 hemi rr that has the correct hemi brake assembly and the ports are on the fender side. I can easily make my brake lines work either way, I just don't want to bend them to fit if my master cylinder is incorrect

Some were as you have stated, But actually, you have what is the correct Booster/MC for a Hemi set up. Looks like you went to the Ramman for you set up too?

Huh that's interesting I thought a Hemi booster/mc was different from what I have, with ports on the fender side. That's how my buddy's hemi is anyway :thinker: And not sure about ramman, the booster/mc are original to my car as far as I know (I just cleaned them up and painted them) and the brake lines are through a guy named Frank down in California that deals in some repop parts. Bought my brake/fuel lines and fuel tank from him.

Here are some of those pictures I mentioned of supposedly "correct" or original Chargers with booster/mc assemblies the same as mine. If technically either way would be correct, I wonder why some have one style and some the other ? :icon_scratch:

Oh ok, that would make sense. come to think of it the hemi rr I mentioned was originally optioned with drum brakes.

I think I'll go over to Napa and see what they show for a repop replacement too, just out of curiosity.

This is true on most cars with power disc brakes the brake lines exited out towards the engine and power drum brake cars the lines exited towards the fender.

Actually, before you all rack your brains over what -- was -- what..... ALL master cylinders should be fender side, repeat, fender side, exit fittings...... the engine side exit fittings was RECALLED -- because the lines were too close to the manifolds -- heated
up -- and created "vapor lock" or "brake fade" -- and it was realized because of the extreme heat when a car was in motion.....
I reproduced the correct 1967 - 1970 Front Disc - Rear Drum with Power Brakes Master Cylinder; have the Master Cylinder, the Master Cylinder KIT, the Front Disc Brake Pads, and the 2 - piece ROTORs (plate sonly)........
Call me -- Chryslers @ Carlisle and Mopar Nats are passed -- Craig -- 516 - 485 - 1935....................New York.

I would like to see that recall.Every Superbird that was built had disc brakes and engine side exit along with all the other B-body disc brake cars,if that's the case,"everyone" ignored the recall.show me !!

I never heard of that recall, do you have any info on it?

i have owned many b bodys and never really thought about it before,but all the disc cars pointed to the eng and all the drum cars pointed to the fender.still comes up that way if looked up in napa as well.(checked online)

Yep I just got back from Napa and checked too, their mc's portal correspond to drum and disk like everyone's been saying. And I wouldn't think there was a recall if they're still available as remanufactures ?

In any case I'm just going to make my brake lines work to the mc I have, I'll keep clearance to my headers in mind but it shouldn't be a problem from looking at it last night. Thanks for all the input guys

Only the 68-70 with power disc brakes has the brake lines exited towards the engine.
