Matching numbers (maybe)

So...I looked at a car this weekend. The car is 100% to have numbers matching engine. It was a Charger 68 RT. Local car forever. Never been out of town. All the history known. May 68 car. Block cast in October 67. Front stamp pad painted so did not see the rest of the data up there.

Order number on rad bracket matches order number on Fender tag.

Here is what the VIN comapred to what was on the engine looked like...

VIN....XS29L8B267512
Stamp on upper rear engine above bell housing was exactly "200" off. "8B267312"

What gives here?

How clean was the area, possible the # was filled in to look like a 3? If not & I'm by far no expert but could the # have been miss numbered?

Called a factory miss stamping......or hard to see the actual number....

What gives is Billy on the assembly line went to the bar on lunch (circa 68') and had a few Genny cream ales and then came back and grabbed those stamps seeing double and messed up most likely!

Sure does, but the 3 and 5 can look similar under thick paint, so make sure it isn't just the font used that looks like the wrong number.

There are other numbers stamped by the oil pan that has a 10,000 day date you can use to confirm also, not the VIN but line up that date with the other numbers. What trans? Auto has a mirror of that stamp right across from the engine stamp. Should look relatively identical.
