Just finished painting the engine compartment today. Custom mix B5 blue to match the outside. Car is two stage but I opted to do the engine bay in single stage for simplicity. After the owner stripped the complete engine compartment with a hand held sand blaster, I fixed a gaping hole near the master cylinder then primed with HOK direct to metal primer. Yesterday the owner scuffed the primer with gray Scotchbrite so was pretty much ready to go for me today. I still need to fix the black stripe where it meets the blue and black out behind the grille, but good progress nonetheless. This coming weekend he get's to put all the stuff back on setting the stage for the engine install. There is light at the end of the tunnel!

Thanks for posting the progress photos Meeps! I've actually been a little lazy in posting progress photos of my car lately, so I'm glad to see some proof of all the work we've been doing. The car has actually been drivable the entire 5 yrs I've had it as I've completed suspension, brakes, fuel system, paint, interior - until 3 months ago when we pulled the small block in preparation for the 451. That means I had the outside painted without pulling the small-block, which means when we pulled that motor, we had to do a bunch of masking and protecting of the newly painted body as we sand-blasted the engine bay. Not that easy to say the least and in hind-sight I recommend doing all body paint at once instead of engine bay separate, but it did allow me to drive the car often up until recently. Meeps has been great in guiding me with his expertise most of the way.

Lots of people have had a hand in the work on this car - Meeps, Dennis H, non-FBBO Mopar guru John Cross (introduced to me by Dennis), dpstark2, my buddy Ed, and even a new friend from Costa Rica stopped by yesterday to help me scotch-brite the primer. It's coming together nicely and I'm getting excited to get the new motor in. Stay tuned...

This looks like an exciting project, and it seems you have the right sort of talent at hand to carry out a fantastic restoration.
Well done all you guys. :icon_thumright:

nice color that is my favorite mopar color, keep on with the great work guys.

Thanks all. Just so you know - my '68 original color per the body tag was QQ1 (pre-cursor to B5 blue that came out in '69). Previous owner painted a very non-B5 blue shade in his garage and it was looking pretty rough when I got it, so a re-paint was in order. I compared paint strips of QQ1, '69 B5 blue (same for '70), and '71 B5 blue. The '71 shade looked the nicest so that's what I went with. I first saw that '71 shade on a '69RR at the annual mopar alley (confirmed with the car's owner) and couldn't believe how much more I liked that B5 than the other 2 versions.

So if you like it, '71 B5 blue is the ticket (PPG code 2306)

Congrats, looks great Meep but you know it would have been allot easier to just paint it black. :poke:

That does look great Alex, I like the single stage idea for the engine bay, just enough difference between it and the car itself, i think that will look great when all done...
