URGENT LEGISLATIVE ALERT

Pro-Hobbyist Michigan Racing Bill Introduced

Legislation (H.B. 6377) that would allow any municipality to issue a permit for a sanctioned motor vehicle racing event on highways, streets or airport runways within its geographical jurisdiction has been introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives. Current Michigan law only allows cities to issue these permits. This bill would allow counties, cities, villages or townships to issue similar permits.

We Urge You to Contact ALL Members of the Michigan House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee Immediately (List Below) to Request Their Support for H.B. 6377

H.B. 6377 would promote legal racing in Michigan and boost the state’s tourism sector and help rural communities.

H.B. 6377 acknowledges that rural paved highways and roads are the best places for legal open road racing.

H.B. 6377 would make it easier for event organizers to secure one permit at the county level, rather than securing permits from each government entity – federal, state or local – with jurisdiction along the race route.

H.B. 6377 would provide that airports could be used for shootouts and that local governments would have the authority to close airport runways for this purpose.
Please contact members of the Michigan House Tourism, Outdoor Recreation and Natural Resources Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their support for H.B. 6377.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to [email protected]. Thank you for your assistance.

Damn, I wish Tennessee would do this. Maybe I could convince the locals to make the street in front of my house a dragstrip!! LOL

Like this idea! Did some already do something like this? I mean use an old shutdown airport for a weekend race and gathering?
I thought it was in Pittsburgh,Pa.

we use to have this up here in the early 70's. not a lot but certain towns did have it and it was a hit. we still have some on an old army base close to me with 2 old runways. its called arm drop racing, a spin off of pinks, but for trophys. what i was told the reason for the on road or street stuff going the way of the dodo bird was the insurance.

good luck in michigan guys.

You have to remember, places like Detroit are now ghost towns since all of the American jobs have been sold(correction: given) to foreign countries and now the cities/states are scraping the bottom of the barrel to generate income so they can spend it on useless programs for their friends. You know, like the one mentioned in Maryland on electric cars sound levels, college studies on why whales fart in shallow water, etc. Issue a permit, collect a fee, cops hide in the bushes waiting to catch you when you leave.

We had one here in Jax a few years back. An old military runway. No safety at all. People lined the pavement, no guard rails, nothing. Guy lost control and killed one and injured several. The idea is great to eliminate street racing, but someone would have to be responsible.

Don't Move Just Yet.

In reference to MRHWS' mention of Detroit being a "ghost town": Yes, we've suffered a greater loss than any major city in the country. Our government bodies made it profitable and even encouraged (via NAFTA, CAFTA, non-implementation of import tariffs designed to level the playing field (there's a reason it's called Protectionism)) industry to locate their mfg. outside the U.S.--but we're still far from being a ghost town. And before we envision municipalities sanctioning drag racing on residential streets, the bill before the Michigan State Legislature has safeguards built into it regarding location, oversight by authorities, sponsoring and sanctioning bodies, etc. and is an outgrowth of Gran Prix racing that was conducted for years on Detroit's Belle Isle. For good 'ol "heads up" racing, we'll still have to go out to Milan.

15 miles just Northeast of me is a little town called Albion, They were a few years back going to make a drag strip there, had everyone around here me included all excited.. BUT the town folks said To much noise, traffic, what not. City officials last i heard dumped it. Does not make any sense at all, More money to town, the business, gets some kids off the streets ect ect.... Crazy people, worse then that crazy local officials that doesn't seem to think enough of there own town to go thru with it. should have a different job!
