i have the oppertunity to pick up a set of max wedge stage VI heads, said to have been ported and flowed and never installed. the price is 1200.00 what will i need to use these on a non max wedge engine. I know the intake is different( huge ports) and i think they require the off set rocker arms, is there anything else i am missing. and i think the price is a steal, am i correct there?

Many of the Stage VI heads had issues in the castings and other areas. I would at the very least have them pressure checked and verify the valve job looks ok before spending the money on those heads. Can you post the flow numbers?

If it was me I'd ask BradH on moparts.com he had a set or two of the 6's at one point.

Too cheap, something is missing. You can buy new bare castings for 600 each. If someone ported them any at all it would raise the price drastically.

ok the reason they are cheap is that its a friend of mine selling off another guys max wedge collection, so i am getting a good guy deal. the heads were ported by turk, if that means anything. they have the offset rockers and spacers, i was wrong saying they had not been run, they went 10.0's in his 64 plymouth( also for sale). i can get the manifold also( orig 64 cross ram for 1500.00 or an indy bathtub looks like it is new for 500.00)

if your using a low deck block an indy 2d will work. the port window on the 2d will need to be opened up but there is material in the runners for that. if your using a a tall deck block you'll have to find the spacers to use any intake, cross ram/indy 2d/ victor/etc.

What is it your wanting to do with them ?? Just curious... What do you get for the $1200 ??... How much can you get the whole top end package for ??... Seems like, Decent prices for those parts, they all have pros & cons on almost any head for different specific applications, there are far worse stuff out there, for far more money, allot depends on how or who they were ported by {I've never heard of Turk, but that doesn't mean anything, he could be a good porter}... if they fit your needs, there's allot more invested than that price/cost... sounds like allot more than just heads with valves & a port job... Have someone who knows what they're looking at check them out for you... Good Luck

i am collecting parts for my next build, so far i have a paul rossi prepped super stock 440 block, its a 70 hp. i also have a ultrdyne roller cam 745 lift dont remember the duration off hand. my plans are for a 496 stroker in the 11-12 to 1 ratio, the cam was given to me so if it does not fit the plan then it will not be used. i dont want to piece meal out my current 440 to use parts on the new motor. i would like to build a solid 9 sec piece. the car is a 67 satty dana rear w/ mark williams 35 spline axles and 4.88 gears with a spool. willwood brakes on all corners. a jim hughes built 727 full man w/ a 4500 turbo action"J" converter. the current engine is a std bore 440 with kb pistons, H beam rods std steel crank, comp 305/525 flat tappet with 1.6 roller rockers and 3/8 mopar perf pushrods and ported 440 source heads, they flow 278 @ 600. mopar M1 single plane with a proform 850 race carb. all msd ign using the 6AL-2 WP_20131012_007.jpg

The original Stage 6 heads use std length 440 valves. 440 has the shortest valve of any american V-8. That limits the port roof and spring size. Early Stage 6 have also known to be "soft" castings. That being said my friend's 64 used to run 9.90-10.00 with a pair and a cross ram. The price is reasonable if they check out. But don't expect 9.50s out of a 3500lb car with them.

The Stage VI Max Wedge head is a funny animal. Real short valves, a weird combustion chamber and very small hardened seats. Without extensive research they will not flow very well. You should get some flow numbers before you decide to invest your money.

The one set of MW STG VI we've tested flowed like this OOTB and after porting.

Lift..............IN/EX..................................................IN/EX

.100..........61/58...................................................77/70
.200.........124/115...............................................160/135
.300.........188/149...............................................224/184
.400.........232/156.....after tearing our hair out........273/220
.500.........256/162......while porting they went.........311/254
.600.........257/165...............................................335/271
.700.........261/168...............................................346/288

There are better heads out there that are easier to work with.

my friend who did the port work on my stelth's has a flowbench, and also has the MW heads, i will get the numbers. thanks for all the info. super helpfull.
