there I was- late 1968 lQQking at cars at local dodge dealer, to this point I'd never seen a '68 Charger that I could recall but I see nthe yellow tail end of one on the line and thought wow thats an awesome looking car- it was a base charger with 318,we went for a ride, I liked the style of course but the 318 was a bit anemic for me -you understand. few cars down the line and there was a blue '68 with the 383- now we're talking -took it for a ride loved it, just about to make a deal and a few more cars down the line spotted a black on black on black '68 Charger RT , we had to take that out for a drive, OK that -was my car- end of story.
they wanted about $2400.00 for the 318 car- $2600.00 for the 383 Charger as I recall- and $3600.00 for the loaded black Charger-white bumble bee tail stripes 440 RT. no problem I told the salesman- lets write up the RT, he did and of course had to go clear it with the closer- and I waited- and waited- and waited, just about to walk out the salesman came back looking like he'd just run a marathon, tie loosened no jacket and out of air.?WOW what did this guy do?
anyway- he puts down the contract on the table and says- wait for it--
will you give us $2600.00 for the Charger??
I'm thinking- I just agreed to the asking $3600.00 for the RT and he counters with $2600.00?? I for once didn't spill the beans and said I think we can do this but I need to check something on the car first- took the contract to check the VIN #, yup it was for the RT. So- I sauntered back in to the office, trying not to run and said all right we can do this- he wrote it up and I drove it home for $2600.00 all I can think of is he got confused after driving 3 cars and mixed up the prices- I will allow him this one mistake. life was good in '68...
sadly the Charger was destroyed in 1970 when I was rear ended by a 396 Chevelle going about 70 when we were stopped in a lane he hit the charger so hard it actually knocked his engine and trans out of his car,I was thrown into the back package panel at the rear window and was now rolling down the highway about 5 feet from the steering wheel and brakes, but I did get it stopped. the car in front of me was a VW bug I was slammed into that car so hard the charger bumper broke his engine in two... after all was said and done, the VW and chev were towed into history and I was able to drive the charger home. it looked like hell but it got me there. his insurance took good care of me- paid of the charger and told me to find a car I liked- they would buy it for me .I went car shopping found a '69 Cuda fastback with a 440 in it with 3000 miles on it for $1600.00- called the insurance Co and told them I found a car -the dealer told them the price- they asked me if I was sure that car would be OK- they loved the price-they sent him a check andI drove out in a '69 B-5 blue 440 Cuda. life still good.

Thanks for sharing the story would love to see pics of the cars

Thanks for sharing the story. Any pics to go along with it?
somewhere I have pictures of the charger after the wreck,I'll try to find them, just Polaroid photographs in that era- although seeing a bent and broken Dodge is not a positive in my life. I had another story concerning the same dealership but under a new owner, I'll write that one up later.

Those were the days. I was born about 36 years too late..........

,I'm 76 and even though things hurt and are harder-I wouldn't give up one day of growing up in the 50s and drag racing in late 50's first car was a '53 Olds stick shift weak transmissions I was towed home far to often -didn't care- it was fun. I dont have many pictures from the late 60's early 70s. my home was robbed and one of the item taken was boxes of photo's, I'm sure they didn't want pictures -they just grabbed what the could in the garage and ran. of all the things taken - losing the photo's was the worst.

68 myself, still love the stories w/o pics! I can picture them very easily. Jeff

Great story ! 68 is my favorite year Charger and always has been. Thanks for posting it. Ron

Love the story! It would’ve been awesome to be a teenager in the 50’s.

the '68 is also my best pick for charger years,I thought the grill and tail lights were the best as well, the divider in the '69 grill detracted from it. anything vertical in a car design detracts from it.
(IMHO)

cool story thanks for sharing

Column shift on the Olds? Remember driving my uncle's 56(?) with the slushamatic that kinda went into neutral when making a turn. Fluid coupling-no torque converter, but you could back out of the driveway & go into 'drive' w/o any damage.

I owned a 1968 yellow,blk top,blk interior, blk BB stripe. R/T
my favorite car...looked like this~

One afternoon I went to the dealer to see my older brother who was a service manager(1968)
I was watching people unload cars off the semi, when one guy backed off and goosed a 68 charger R/T going in reverse, and rammed it into the building. I could not believe my eyes!(I was 16)OUCH! 68's are the best!

THAT HURT JUST TO READ ABOUT IT.. HAVING SAID THAT--I had a '69 charger 500 ,hemi 4 speed car (500 flush grill and back window) I took out the hemi -which I wanted - I put a 440 in it and resold it for $700.00 ,it was a decent performer with the 440 running mid 11's
