On my 63 Dodge I noticed that there is a box sort of configuration that the spring sits in, about 3" high or so. It has a rubber cushion below and above the spring and then the rear end sits on top of the box. It actually would act as a spacer and would lower the car. Is this something I should reuse or just eliminate it all together?

I will take a few tomorow.....I have never seen this on a car but then the earliest I have owned before the 63 was a 64.

Here are a couple of photos of what I was talking about.

Ok, just got thet rest of the mess taken apart and removed the boxes. What I found is a 1 1/2" hole in the spring perches instead of a 1/2" hole for the spring pins. The rubbers are shot and you can see where the rear end was wondering in the rubber mounts. What I need is two 1 1/2" diameter bushing with 1/2" holes drilled in the center. These need to be 3/8" thick to fill the hole and will end up being captive between the spring and the housing which will keep the rear end centered on the sring. These need to be hard material to hold things straight. I can machine parts BUT the place I am working doesn't have the equipment to do what I need.....can anyone lend me a hand??

Someone at some time took the rearend springs and all from a a 73 to 79 B body and bolted them in your 63. I would hope you got new U bolts for your new springs? Ditch the box and rubber pieces and install your new springs. Those things are called spring isolators by the way and where used from 73 up to reduce noise,

I have new U bolts but the springs can't be mounted the way things are, I need the bushings or new spring perches...bushings will be a whole lot easier.

Bushings would have to be custom made:eusa_boohoo:I was thinkin{smoke from ears},,,,,,,,,,maybe cut a steel plate the fits on your perch and drill the right size hole:idea1:Otherwise you have to replace the perches:munky2:

Meep-Meep is going to make me a set of bushings which will solve the problem, they will fill the void in the spring perch and allow the pin to sit centered and solid.:icon_salut:

Red, thats what I would have done too.

It made more sense to do that instead of removing the old perches, buying new ones and having them welded on. This way I install one bushing per side and install the housing and the new U-bolts.

PERFECT!!!!!I have the urge to say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,MEEEEEEEEEP_MMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!!

I told him the dimensions and what material I wanted and as he said, they are just like thick washers. They will hold the rearend in a fixed position and due to the design of the bushing, can not fall out. I don't know if anything like this is offered for owners of the 73/76 cars but Meep-Meep could probably sell a few sets to those that want to firm up the rearends of their cars and eliminate the rubber.
