So I received my 5" Hemi hood scoop last week. Yes it's too tall but the plans are to trim it down to the proper height, which allows room for air cleaners on the Indy Cross Ram.

The scoop has a number of L-type brackets on the inside to use for mounting. I have also read on FBBO that a fellow lost his VFN scoop when he used the L-brackets for mounting.

So, my plan is to fiberglass an inside lip that's about 3/8" X 3/8" (likely plywood) on the inside after I have it trimmed to the proper height and attach fasteners through the new inner lip. That's the plan but wondering about successes or failures by others here. While the old Plymouth doesn't have a hemi at the moment, I like the hemi scoop and the wedge certainly could be replaced down the road.

Any good info to share on mounting the scoop guys? It's going onto the stock steel hood. image.jpg

any problem on actually fibreglassing the scoop to the bonnet? or is that wrong?
if it was me i would fibreglass in some aluminum flatbar and use big washers each side of the bonnet to spread the stress with some small stainless bolts

That's an idea! Has anyone done this and I'm wondering about expansion difference if any, between fibreglass and aluminum.

im the one the one that lost my scoop and what you are planning to do will work fine, i had to fasten the side of the scoop to the bracket to finish the event, the scoop is ok the l brackets pull out of the fiberglass, good luck! im gonna glass mine in after i rivet it all together this winter,, much racing left to do!

Hey thanks for the reply. Too bad about your experience, I'm taking precautions beforehand based on your post. Thanks!!!

with my reverse cowl, I fibreglassed in 25mmx6mm flatbar to strengthen it up, aluminium wont expand in this application if any at all

Thanks again Benno. I'll be trimming the scoop down enough that the current L brackets will be off. Would need like an aluminum angle fibreglass'd in and then secure through the hood. Liking this!

If you are going to trim the scoop, I would set the scoop on the hood where you want it, and lay pencil on the hood and trace the hood contours onto the scoop.then when you make the cut it will fit perfectly. If you use angle aluminum it won't be able to fit the contour of the hood.

Not a VFN scoop, but epoxied in aluminum plates on top of the inward turned lip and threaded them for attachment screws. Added the stainless steel pin in the front for extra insurance.

What brand scoop Dave? I am looking to get one for my '65 vert

The scoop is a Glasstek. Even though the scoop is heavy weight glass and well made I would not recommend purchasing from them. On close inspection, looking at the opening of the scoop from the front, I saw that one side was 90* to the hood and the other side was 'splayed' out about 3/4". I contacted Robert about this and he stated that they had taken the mold right from an original factory aluminum scoop on a hemi car. He said that he knew the car owner and that it was made that way by the factory tin bender. I asked him why he didn't tell me this before I ordered the scoop. His answer was that he hadn't gotten very many complaints so he continued to ship them that way. He did give me the option to return it. I elected to split the upright side lengthwise and re-glass it to make the sides symmetrical. It was a lot of extra, unnecessary work. I don't care about originality on my car, as it's a 63 Fury with a non-original max wedge and a hemi scoop...
I'll add a couple of pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.
Robert's a nice guy, but wasn't forthright with me and therefore, I won't recommend him.

Thanks for the advise and I will be doing exctly that. Right now the back of the scoop is sitting up at the rear centre so I need to get it flush across the back and then follow the hood contour for marking. Need to set the Indy set up on the engnie first too in order to see what I need for room for 3" X 9" oval filters. Do you have an idea what amount of slope would look best for the scoop? I'm running a newer K frame so the engine is back almost a couple of inches too.

That is noticeable for sure. Definitely needed to be corrected. Nice 63 and the underside of the hood, very professional!

Yes exactly, the angle will need to have some mods to it; almost a V. Liking the idea of angle, clean and professional. Thanks Furyus!

my scoop on my coronet is from vfn. and I just put 2 bolts down through the front and bolted the l brackets down and has worked fine. been on my car since 2005. i'v had the car up to around 140 mph on interstate a few time's to blow the carbon out and nothing has happen. here's a pic. of mine.1116206_10201144602873396_1456893612_o.jpg

That tells me the front bolts are adding lots of reinforcement to yours. A good move to use them and 9 years with no problems speaks loud.
My L brackets will be coming off when I shorten the scoop and the plan is to make it as nice as it can be. The aluminum angle is about the best idea so far and tapping the holes to secure from under is pretty damn classy. I will be securing the front as well. Nice Coronet!

superstock440; Nice car. Like the striping on the hood. Had to go out to the garage to see if you swiped my high beams...lol

when you put the angled aluminum on the scoop, you should put some holes in the aluminum that will be glassed to the scoop so the glass will go through and attach to the scoop to add some extra strength. just a thought.

Agreed! That's a great idea Super! Permanent bond that way and I will be drilling a number of equally spaced holes.

The Plymouth is coming completely apart shortly and hitting the rotisserie, but the scoop gets modified and fitted first. I have Edelbrock Victor Max Wedge heads going on too so have to allow about an extra 1/2" space for that too. It's been abouut 5 years since I've had a Mopar on the rack; gonna be fun!

Excellent feedback and ideas guys!

to bad you weren't closer. been looking for a 64 hood to make a fiberglass mold off of and I would make you a glass one and mold the scoop in permeated so you would not have to drill hole in your metal hood. love that still of 64 Plymouth. going to be taking mine all apart this winter to redo.

That would have been a good deal for sure Super! I do have access to another very mint stock hood still. I got at it today and making good progress. I'm glad that I went with the 5" and then worked my way down. The height is good now, I have 1" of space between the air cleaner and the scoop. The Victor Max Wedge Heads will rise the intake about a 1/2" so I need that space. Next I'll make my aluminum angle. That will take awhile by the time I drill it all and increase the angle to match the scoop and then glass it all in place. Once all the scoop fabrication is all done the old girl can come all apart as it get's a complete face lift on the rotisserie!image.jpg fibimage.jpgimage.jpg

The orange is going, and something new. Not sure what colour yet but sure am leaning towards synergy green. It goes with both black and chrome.
