I bought a new toy a few months back and now it's time to finally share it with you. My brother found a racingjunk ad for the 73 Duster that was built by Dick Landy for the three way shootout with Chebbie and Furd using each of the big three's crate engine. Of course the Duster won the shootout. (all covered in a 1992 Hot Rod article. Then in 2002 Landy sold the car to Gary & Tony Hickman so they could race the car in CA, AZ and NV. In 2004 the 360 crate engine received a shot of Landy steroids and made over 500 HP (2004 HR article). After they put the engine back in (with many upgrades to all of the systems) the car ran high 10's until a valve spring retainer broke and ended up in the oil pan. The valve did not drop thankfully (only about 1/3 of the retainer came off), but the car was put back in the trailer where it set until Mopars at the Strip in 2013 where it finally made another appearance. There is made a photo op for Mopar Action (Dec 2013 article). So I ended up buying the car and drove out to pick it up (I ended up with the Haulmark trailer it was in too.) So I brought it back to IN and took the engine out to see how bad it was. The damage was very minimal, so we started by trying to take the retainers and springs off. The springs bent our compressor (not a junk one, we had used this to put .600" lift springs on my brother's big block), so after we bent the compressor back into shape and carefully adjusted it we got the springs off. As soon as we got the first spring off, we new we had a real problem. The springs were very tall (I mean like way too tall for a stock length valve Mopar. So we started checking the spring and found out "someone" had put big block Chebbie spring on it (1.850" installed height vs 1.650" height on the 360). The Crane solid roller cam in the engine we needed 250 pound of seat force and 500 pounds over the nose force, combine that with the short height, there is only one set of springs that would work (not one manufacturer, one spring) which happened to be made by Comp Cams). We shimmed the springs for proper height, put in new retainers, keepers and put it all back together after a thorough cleaning. We rebuilt the carb and rejetted it for IN (800ft elev vs 5000ft in NV). The engine fired on the first turn and after we set timing, it ran very well. I made a few passes at the last open day at the track with the best being 7.14 @ 99MPH (1/8 mile), so I barely missed my first 10 second pass. Pictures to follow shortly.

Them ol'racers had some really unique tricks on how to make power, trial & error... Then when they found something that worked in their combos, no matter the make of the part, they stuck with it & held it pretty close to the vest, never usually divulging their specific little intricate speed secrets.... Thanks for the cool story & congrats on buying a little piece of Dick Landy & MoPar history... I'm looking forward to the photos & any more information, on what's in that car &/or engine combo & what other tricks they used...

Wasn't there just an article done on this car? I know I read one a couple weeks ago but I don't remember where I came across it.

Mopar Action Dec. 2013 IIRC he said in his post...

Budnicks,

Landy did not put these springs in (I should have clarified this part), the springs that Landy originally used from Crane (in the 2004 HR engine rebuild) had the wrong solid height published (.950"), so when they were installed and set up for a 1.075" height, in actually the solid height was supposed to be 1.050", so you can imagine what happened. The springs started failing and the car slowed down. A tranny shop that was putting the trans brake in, noticed that the engine was running bad, so they pulled the valve covers only to find the broken springs. The trans shop replaced them with the wrong springs.

Thanks for the clarifications... cool car & keep the stories, photos & history coming

This Duster was as Plymouth built it, a very loaded out car. A1 Silver (gray metallic), 318, auto, Space Duster package, AC, power steering. power disk brakes and wheel lip mouldings. It was built very late in '73 model year. We think that it may have been some kind of engineering or executive car. The story starts out in the April 1990 Hot Rod Article, where the car shows up in the blue paint scheme with the superlite wheels with Paul Rossi (famous west coast Mopar racer) as the owner and an Arrow Performance prepared (based off of the MP build up bible) 318 that made 331 HP and with some Rossi tuning, went 12.99 ET at 104 MPH. Larry Shepard (then head of MP helped with a pile of MP parts). Then when the big three were offering small block crate engines, they needed someone for the Mopar camp. Larry bought the car from Rossi, sight unseen and gave it to Landy for the shootout. Landy installed an out of the box Mopar Crate "Super Commando" 360 and installed an 8-3/4 with 4.10 gears for the shootout. Of course the Duster put a beating on the Camaro and the Mustang to win the shootout with Robert Landy behind the wheel. Robert races the car a few times, but in 2002 Dick sells the car to Gary and Tony Hickman. With Tony behind the wheel the Duster was raced in CA, AZ and NV. In 2004 the 360 needed a freshen up, so back to DLI it went and with the Landy steroids, the engine made more than 500 HP (completely detailed in the October 2004 edition of HR). With the new engine the car needed some updates, so in went the cage, new Wilwood disc brakes, manual steering and a transbrake. While at the tranny shop for the transbrake valvebody install, the car was not running right, so the tranny shop opens up the engine, finds the broken valve springs and puts the Chebbie valve springs in. The car only makes a few more passes before at the 2006 "Mopars at the Strip" the valve retainer brakes and part of it ends up in the oil pan. The car is parked in the trailer and it sets until making an appearance at the 2013 "Mopars at the Strip" as a static display (non-running) where it ends up being photographed for the December 2013 Mopar Action article. Gary (with failing health) decides to sell the car and that is how I came to own it.

If anyone knows Paul Rossi or can get in contact with him, I would like to talk with him about the history of this car before he had it. Also if anyone wants .pdf copies of the 4 magazine articles, just PM me. I would also like to talk to Robert Landy if anyone has that connection.

This is the first I have told anyone outside of my local friends that this car is now in IN.
