msd ignition box

hey guys iv been having issues with my six pack. the thing is it runs good as long as i dont open it up but as soon as i open up the outboards it starts to run very rich and ends up soaking the plugs. so my question is do you think an msd ignition box will help out? i only ask because someone once told me thats what i needed to do but they are kind of expensive and thought i would get a 2nd opinion before dishing out $260 bucks

I would try adjusting the outboards first.

What gregs70 said, look at your carbs first. Sounds like the initial issues may be there. An msd ignition is going to increase your spark and timing abilities (depending on model) but not how the fuel dumps into the carbs when you step on it. But with the correct fuel mixture going in the hotter spark will make things burn better. But it would be a patch to use the msd box and it's hotter spark burn the extra fuel.

Btw, I have the msd 6al2 programmable and pro billet distributor on my 383 and it made a huge difference starting and running over my old setup. But I'm still working out carb bugs.

While a MSD would help the engine on a lot of area's, your issue right now is a rich running set up that should be self with first. Once you get that set up tuned and dialed in right, the MSD will enhance what you did, not cure what you have failed to do.

Tune that puppy up right first!

I had the same problem with my Six Pack. Turned out the center carb was leaking gas into the intake. I installed a new Holley kit in it and that cured the problem. You can't adjust the outboard carbs as they are opened by vacuum.

Check the carb bases for cracks. This is important since over time these carbs take a real beating from the heat.
