Circa 1972.
North Dakota straight
stretch freeway. It's 17 deg
outside, a passenger in a
'69 Mercury Marquis. My
dad in a '64 Falcon 260,
(hopped up with a 3/4 cam),
2:30 am, haulin' *** just
ahead. The Mercury had
plenty left in that 429.
One driver trying to roll
a joint, the other, well on
his way to being inebriated.
110 mph made those
centerlines seem like a solid
white line.
Playing loud on the radio
was the first time release
of Carly Simon's "You're So
Vain".
To this day, whenever I hear
that song, it takes me back
to that time. On the knifes
edge.
