I been lazy sorry no updates in so long
I have the basic same post over in paint and body but I will only update this thread from now on.

Restored hardware The Black parts are Black Oxide not paint & the silver parts have been plated not painted all labor performed by myself or my partner nothing is farmed out except engine machine work.

I read a couple horror stories about cracking lead and I decided I better redo this so I stripped it back down.

What are you going to use to fill that seam? I chunked all the factory filler out of mine and had planned on using long strand fiberglass filler due to the thickness of it. I waited too long and it flash rusted so I have to re-blast it, but what's your plan?

Hi Jon
Well I sanded it back down melted the lead out where it was cracked and I have wire wheeled it now I plan to put down some more Spot welds, a couple of the spot welds were broken there in my case and lead was cracking so now after I weld it up Im gonna grind my welds back down sand it a little and put ALLMETAL filler on it followed by some fiberglass filler IF necessary and blend it all in with the roof & paint as normal.

Man, Your doing a great job on it and all the parts! very nice...

Hi Ron thanks for the complements
Be careful what ya order from Eastwood they mark stuff up bad, well they all do, but Eastwood they are one of the most expensive.

Lots of other suppliers out there with the same products cheaper

Sweet car, I really like all of the coatings "thought about trying them myself". I like your plan with the seam, I welded mine solid and used fiber strand but now that I've started using All Metal I would use it instead. Keep up the good work

And I thought I was detailed, that's fantastic looking. I went the paint/power coat route with all the little bits and parts on mine. I thought about doing what you have done, but if I were, I would not be as far along as I am today, plus I don't have the space for a plating setup. Looks awesome man!

I tell you the plating thing is a another world, I am learning it the hard way (Didnt read the book thoughly!) I made stupid mistakes repeatedly and messed my solution up its not the cheapest way to go and its labor intensive more polishing than I had anticipated to get nice results. The learning curve while not necessarily difficult its easy to do something stupid in process and mess up the solution.
Reading a book on the subject first is very good idea. Or just skim over the stuff tho the book over your shoulders and just go at it like I did. I'm into it now for about $1500 almost for a few parts I could have just dropped off at a Plater for a few hundred.

I really like the Black Oxide for the engine brackets and pullys its more correct than paint is.
I would like to get the equipment and chemicals to do the semi-Hot black oxide its better than the true Hot black oxide or the Cold process in my opinion, the hot is 300 degrees the semi hot is 210 ish, The Hot one (300) is the dangerous one there is also another one that's in excess of 500 degrees but that's using Bluing salts completely different look to the finish on the metal.

You guys are making me look bad for not starting my 73 SSB that I have owned for 39 years and was stored for 17 years after my youngest smashed it up for me

Might be time to let it go if your not gonna do anything with it.
I think after you have let it sit this long your never gonna do anything with it.

You know DoRight, it may have been difficult, but when people see you car, you can say that you did all the work. I farmed out a lot of stuff, like powder coating and what not, I did do the majority of the work to get things ready, and I have stripped and put the car back together, which is a lot of work all by itself. That's cool what you are doing.

I almost sold mine about 5 years ago when I was unemployed, thankfully I found a job, and was able to work long enough to get her done. Its a tough call, my car sat in the garage for 15 years before it moved again, but I am glad I kept it now, because she is finally coming back together.

You know your not getting any younger. Mine sat for a looooooooooooong time before I started working on it. My luck, i'll get everything done on it, fire it for the first time and then keel over from a heart attack.

I almost sold it after it got damaged but had a spot to store inside at my brother inlaws now it is home in my garage
I bought a mig welder and will be practicing on scrape sheet metal from a friends junk yard before I start on the car

Dnt say you wouldnt die with a smile on your mug hearing the thing fire for the first time in how long?
Only one person to blame ya know.

Before the rebuild, the last time the motor was fired up was in 1989. Yeah, I can only blame myself. If I hadn't had sex with the 2 previous wives, gotten married, then divorced and had to pay child support, it probably would be running/driving now. At least with my 3rd wife, they tore down the baby factory and put in a playground. LOL>

Don't go feeling like the Lone Ranger you don't see fancy store bought restoration parts on my car.
(I'm on number 3 now myself plus all the above lol)
