I have been looking on Craigslist regularly to see what pops up for the Hemi I'm building. What do I find yesterday? A old Edelbrock twin Dominator Tunnel ram. It's mint, and looks to have probably only been installed once! I traded a few dollars and a set of Six Pack rod cores for it.

So I come home from that 1/2 hour jaunt to the next town over, and make a call on another ad. A pair of cylinder head castings...they have some hairline cracks by the spark plug holes and the guy will take "best offer". They have been sitting for over 25 years since he ran them last.

So we come up with a price and 1 1/2 hour drive later, I have them too!

I brought them back here to the shop, ran them through the spray wash, blasted, magged and pressure tested them. No leaks! I'm going to do a small cosmetic weld on one where it looks like a valve bent and dinged it. Also, I am going to stitch pin the cracks anyway and install alloy seats on every port as well. This way they won't ever crack again.

The date codes are C 24 0 and C 25 0. How rare is that? These should be 1970 heads.

Man, what a good day! Gotta love CL!

Here is a pic of the old girl. I put it on a stand for fun.

Very cool! The last set of iron hemi heads I looked at were junk.

Thanks,
these heads have the typical cracks by the spark plug, and the head is ridiculously thick there. They look to have never had a valve job as the seats still sit "proud" above the chamber. They are kind of pronounced or raised off the chamber. It's weird, Harleys are the same way and I've never understood why or how they do it.

From what the guy told me, he pulled them from a virgin motor that he had in a car and when getting them checked out, they found the cracks. They still had mag powder on them after 25+ years.

I may use both of these even though I have a perfect one as well it would be cool to use this pair out of principal, because of the story I now have on them. After getting them back here to the shop and checking them out, I would have paid 3 times what I did!

I just received a set of rocker covers from MoparMark on here today. My crankshaft should be delivered to a friends shop this week in Chicago and I have all brand new PEP stainless valves and bronze guides for the heads. I am going to order some valve seats this week and get started on the heads as time permits.

I may have to figure out how to post some pictures so I can show how I repair the combustion chamber cracks and machine them for seats.

Moving forward with the Heinz 57 Hemi!
