When I pulled the carpet out of my 68 GTX I found this odd cut someone had patched over. I have been scratching my head trying to figure out why it's there. I plan to beat it down and weld it up. Or should I see how close it is to where an overdrive clearance would need to go?
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Does it look like it was cut from the top, or from something thrashing around inside the driveshaft tunnel?

cut for access to something on tranny?

When I broke the rear output shaft of a 727 in my 66 when my front U joint let go it looked like that. The drive shaft was still hooked up to the 8 3/4 so it made a clean cut then hit the ground and sent the rear of the car a few feet in the air.

Well it seems the gash lines directly up with the inertia ring on the drive shaft. It also appears there is a line of grease that may have come out of the u-joint.

BobJ may have nailed it.

Sounds like the answer....very fortunate that the car did not 'pole-vault' completely when the shaft let loose.

I'll bet the driver could use a clean pair of underwear after that u-joint let loose and beat the crap out of the tunnel.

Yep at least a few feet in the air and about 6 feet sideways. I was kind of busy so I don't know for sure how much. And for changing the underwear your to busy for that but a few @#%# come out. OK a lot of %#$@# come out.
