1970 AC cars had a vacuum pod added on to the heater control valve. Maybe a previous owner was trying to replicate that?

Where does the other end of the vacuum hose go?

Could also be an a/c cutoff switch for low vacuum/ high engine load(?) sometimes used on small motors to help them.

No previous owner. Vacuum hose goes nowhere and I can't find any wiring for it.

There looks to be quite a bit of "mystery" stuff going on in that engine bay.

Yes, that little box there on the left has made the same set of points last for a decade.

That's been added. We could guess at the purpose all day.

The firewall heater control valve has been disconnected, likely due to soaking the carpet w coolant from it's leak. Maybe that has nothing to do w/ the added vac solenoid. In 69 it is just cable controlled, 70 is as Jim C said above. There's at least three places to get it rebuilt. -

I replaced that valve 22 or so years ago. If I remember correctly there are 2 versions of that valve. The original had horizontal connections but all I could find at the time was this version with vertical connections. I'm not sure of the different applications.
Rebuilding is a great option now.
I wasn't sure if the solenoid had been added or not. Thanks for the info. Can you tell me if the screw hole it is attached to was also added or was there something there before? Thanks!

To expand on my previous thought. The switch would be inline to a/c clutch wire, cut power when it sees low vacuum on the engine like hills etc. Hose would connect to manifold vacuum.

I'll explore that theory further. Thanks!
