I have a 727 from a motor home that I'm planning on using in my 65 Coronet. Here is the info on the trans:
P/N 3898870

5751 DOM (4/26/1977)

76 – 77 D100, D200, D300

400 - 440 (short extension)

This being a truck trans it has a short tail housing so I had planned to just get a long tail housing and shaft to install on it, and rebuild it so I could use it in the 65. Finding a housing and shaft are next to impossible so I just bought a whole trans. I'm thinking I'll just transplant all the internals from the truck trans into the donor trans and just use it. The truck trans has the hole in the top for timing and looks pretty rough on the outside. After inspecting the truck trans some more I have come across some items that lead me to believe this is a heavy duty trans like used behind a hemi or a 6-pack. There is a groove around the input shaft and the end is painted yellow. I removed the pan and valve body and sure enough it has the wide kick down band (5 disk clutch ?) and the apply lever has 3.8 stamped on it. This is as far as I have gone. Now I'm wondering will the front planet carrier and the rear annulus gear fit the splines on my donor trans output shaft. Here's the info for it:

P/N 3515845

3678 DOM (8/23/1971)

71 Barracuda, Challenger, Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth 383-2b

72 Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth 400-2b

I was trying to see what I might possibly need to make this work before I tore into 2 727s.
Anybody have any idea if this will work using the donor trans. This will be a street car and possibly make a few passes down the track occasionally.

Just reread your post and no you are not using the cable. The 71-output shaft is not compatible with the 76-later planetary set.

Take apart the car trans and look. You don't need a 5 clutch drum, hi-po input shaft or 4 pin planets. The 3.8 lever is nice. If the donor car trans has a 2.7, 2.9, or 3.2 lever swap it with the truck trans. As long as the donor has a 4 clurch front drum you'll have the hard parts to stand up to any street motor. Also plenty good for high 10's at the track with a good quality band and shift kit. Easy build.

Your 1965 Coronet would originally have had a cable-shifted transmission. Both the transmissions you have are linkage shifted, so you will have to come up with another way to operate it, than what is currently in your car.

Thanks guys for the info. I guess I need to tear into the donor to see what it has internally and go from there. I have a shifter I picked up at a swap meet last winter. Guy had everything to use it on my transmission. Cable, bracket for trans and shift lever for trans all for $125

This 76-77 transmission is supposed to have the late spline output, but I have found that same transmission to have the early output and pinion set. Remember the age of these and suspect that they may have been altered. Never assume that the part number indicates what is inside.

Would you prefer one over the other in a race build?

If we could discount the short truck output, I'd start with-it, heavy-duty parts. As dvw has said the 71 can be easily made to live with some big torque, the real killer of transmissions. Both probably have part throttle kickdown.
