Ok so I picked up a 70satellite that was a 318 car and I have been told that it now has a 400 from a 72 satellite in it. The guy who I got it from only had it for a short time and didn't know much about it or cars in general. The person before him rigged a bunch of stuff to "make it work" now ive ran into this before and can deal with most of it my self but my problem deals with how to tell exactly which engine I have and weather it was a 2 or 4 barrel factory, and if that even matters for ordering parts. The other problem I have is I dont have a manual like haynes or Chilton and while I know a good bit about cars and engines, this is my first nonjeep mopar. That being said, I know the car needs the valves adjusted but have never done them before on a mopar. So I guess the best thing would be if any one knows where I can get a factory service manual for the car and help me identify the engine so I can get one for it also. By the way im new to the site so im not completly fimiliar with everything yet. Thanks in advance for looking yall.

I consider haynes and chitons nothing more than door stops for the most part check ebay for a factory service manual. I believe you will find the rockers on it are the stamped steel unless you are lucky. most 400s that i have found are 4 barrel engines. also on one side of the block you will find the date it was cast. just look around on this site and you will find tons of info and welcome to the site.

Hello SavannahSatellite. Perhaps if you let us know if anything specific is wrong with the engine, we could point you in the right direction.

As A383Wing stated, the valves aren't adjustable. At least, not if they're the stock setup. What is it that makes you think they need adjusting? Are the lifters noisy?

Poke around the site, do some searches and you'll find just about anything you'll need!

Yeah, the lifters rattle like they are about to fall off. I havent taken the valve covers off yet though. One of the problems is that the lower alternator bracket and spacer is missing. Also the same thing with the power steering bracket. Im going to find something to make the spacers with but finding the bolts might be a task. There really arent any mopar specific shops around here and you wont find them in the junk yards either. I dont think the brackets are correct for the engine but I know they aren't universal. So I guess what ill do is get it as good asvi can and get more specific questions. By the way its got a set of cragar five stars that im thinking about getting rid of if any one near me might be interested.

Hey guys got an up date..... I got the brakes fixed which was a pain but on the way to the house I noticed that the car shifted into 1st and 2nd fine but did not want to go into 3rd and when it did if I even touched the throttle it would immediately go back into 2nd. Transmissions are not my forte and I was wondering what might cause this? I think it may be the kick down but I do not know how to adjust it, also the speedo reads 20mph faster than what I'm actually doing, that I know is because of the tires on it and the gear in the tranny but could some one help me with the shifting stuff?

So after driving around for about a week, I have realized that this car was set up for 1/8th mile drag.... it sucks driving on the street. But I have a couple more questions, I looked everywhere I could think to for this info on the site but cannot find it. First... im trying to find what the timing should be set at, its a 400 with a holley double pumper that I believe is a 750 or 850 cfm unit. It has a mild cam and long tube headers, other than that I believe it to be pretty much stock internals. The other two things kind of go together. In 3rd gear at 70 im spinning 3600rpm,way too high. The transmission also shifts into 2nd way too soon and does everything it can to stay out of third. I have adjus ted the kickdown cable to what I could find here on the site and it only made a slight difference. So for this part, is there anything else I could do to the tranny without pulling it out of the car and what would be a good gear set for the rear end that wont slow me down too much but wont have me spinning 3500rpm on the highway?
