im redoing my 8.75 on my 73 rr the housing is going to be satin black . my question is were the backing plates , center section and leaf springs painted or left clear i want it to look like it came from the factory . if anyone has photos of theirs that the restored please post them .

thanks RANDY

Here are some pictures of my Duster

From past experience I have found the housings painted in a semi-gloss black. On occasion I have observed them to be gloss black. The backing plates are almost always gloss black. Leaf springs can be natural metal or semi gloss black. The same goes for the shock plates. The gear housing is sometimes found in natural metal, red brown primer or even black.
It depends on where and when the car was built, and who the supplier of parts was. Your best bet is to carefully clean your original parts and try to determine what was originally used. If you are careful you may be able to recover original paint markings for quality control purposes. Hope this helps.

You can also use plasticote engine enamel from a spray can. Try the cast iron color and rust oleum has a color called Matt nickel. It works good too for the spring perches. Several manufacturers like duplicolor also offer various shades of metal like finishes.

What I did for the gear case on my Duster is sprayed a base coat of cast iron and followed it up with a light mist coat of cast aluminum. Try not to mix brands to keep the possibility of a reaction down.

You can experiment and come up with some pretty convincing looks.

However if you don't paint the bare metal, you will end up with a rusty looking part in no time flat. That's OK if your going for a 100 point concourse car. Cars have surface rust on them when new. Stop by your local new car dealerships and look underneath. You'll be surprised!!!

But me personally I don't like it. It's your car so do what you like best.

The Eastwood stuff works great like tall hair said. The only problem is that you have to order it and wait for delivery. If your in a hurry try your local stores for the brands I mentioned. If you can wait for it, I'd go for the Eastwood stuff.

Here is my 73, all was powder coated 20% black, only thing painted were the leaf springs and it was painted 20% black.

I'm currently doing the rear on my car also(74 Charger). I found the housing to be a gloss black (looks like the gloss you get from cheap spray paint), leafs natural, center natural, brake backing plates a little less glossy than the housing, isolator u clamps, gloss black, u bolts gray phosphate, sway bar brackets gloss black, front spring bracket natural, rear shackles, usually natural or a gray phosphate. My shock plates were a gloss black. St. louis built car. If you paint use a self etching primer and bake if you can. Sorry no pics, still in progress.
